Proposals abound for Mel Gibson healing
AP - Sat Aug 5, 2:10 AM ET

NEW YORK - A Yom Kippur appearance at a synagogue. A trip to Washington's Holocaust museum. A circumcision? Ever since Mel Gibson said he wanted the Jewish community to help him make amends for his anti-Semitic comments, suggestions have been pouring in, some in jest and some quite serious. "I don't think he should be totally drummed out of the business," said radio host and comedian Al Franken. "I think he should just have to start all over again."

http://news.yahoo.com/fc/entertainment/mel_gibson

And Al Franken can go to hell. The Jewish community now clearly owns his soul. He must've realized he'll never work in the industry again if he didn't start kissing their asses.

Is there any other instance in the world where someone is persecuted and made a spectacle of this much other than when it has to do with criticism of Israel/Jews?

Seriously, a big LOL at all this. Others have to see the absurdity here. That apology he made was plenty sufficient, but no.
I kinda feel sorry for Gibson. This whole fiasco has apparently made him a shell of a man.

Call me an anti-Semite all you want. If being one means looking at each side of an issue rationally with fairness and discretion, then I guess I am. God's chosen people or not, they need to learn that their shit still stinks like everyone else's.

I've seen quite a few articles from folks saying that Mel was basically right with his comments(although they were over the top)and that he should not be kissing anyone's arse.Israel is fucking out of control right now,and everyone is tip-toeing,scared to death,to "upset the jewish community."

Any extremist is not going to garner much credibility or respect. That's the problem with a lot of those white supremecists and such; they have blinders on and don't know the meaning of the word diplomacy, which is what you need these days to get any point across. They're just as bad as the opposite side of the spectrum.

People have to learn to think for themselves is all, and keep their cool about it.

I wonder what they'll be like now.

he dont even have to start over
Hes got enough money to keep his kids and their kids and their kids comfortable

Plus i like him and his movies
well except that one "what women want"
it was dumb

he made oodles of money without their studios. methinks they're still pissed. lol, Shylock...

Ignoring the statement he made for a moment....

This isn't about him but what he represents in the minds of many of his detractors. He has been persona non grata since he made the The Passion of the Christ. His personal religious views trend towards the ultra conservative. As I understabd it he has rejected the Catholic Church as "too liberal" and is part of a traditionalist movement that sprung up after Vatican II.

Cindy Sheehan says far worse on a daily basis than Mel, and she is joined in doing so by most of Westerb Europe and much of left wing America.

It isn't that his comment isn't worthy of criticism. At minimum they represent baseless stupidity. But rather that this is payback for his movie and for his holding the religious views that he does.

Does anyone here know who Hutton Gibson is?

For those who don't know, he is Mel Gibson's father. Hutton seems to think that the holocaust was at the least exagerated, if not total fiction. No, Mel doesn't have any responsibility for what his father says, but he does have to think several times because of his father's comments, before he says something. Being drunk is a good excuse, but it's not a reason. Now he gets to deal with his own statements, much like any other public figure.

To be honest, what either one said doesn't offend me. Life is a whole lot easier to deal with when you expect ignorance.

I'm not defending him, but it's so typical that all these other groups are coming out of the woodwork now saying he has also offended them in the past. For example, the Gay community is still crying about how the movie Braveheart portrayed gays in a negative light. And apparently Mel made some comment in some British interview about gays and anal sex years ago. Fuck the gay community! It doesn't even compare to what he said about the Jews! :coffee:

Anybody claiming to have no prejudice is full of shit. Those who fail to recognize their own are most often the worst of the lot. Recognizing our flaws, and why we often think and behave as we do, allows one to compensate for our deficiencies and factor it into our decision making.

This is not to imply that it is always a malignant thought process.

As an example I have two nieces only a year apart in age. The older one is very big for her age, and is in fact larger than most of the boys in her class. The younger is more naturally petite and at best of average height for a girl of her age. Subconsciously I note that because of the way the older one looks, I tend to expect more from her with respect to her behavior. She looks "older" so inately I expect her to act that way. And because she isn't tiny in stature I'm less inclined to baby her in the same way I would the younger sister. Our natural prejudices don't necessarily imply evil intent. But they exist in all of us, and require of us some objectivity in our reasoning, a willingness to recognize our motivations, and frame our actions accordingly.

I see the terms "the Holocaust" and "ignorance" were mentioned in a post above. Well, here's a good starting place to eliminate any ignorance completely, not just from one side (which we've all heard plenty of)-

http://www.ihr.org/main/about.shtml

Any attitudes reflecting unwillingness to acknowledge and seriously consider the above archive of information, is also a form of pure ignorance in itself.

Of course, it's to be expected as well.

Fuck the Jews. I don't even know what this is all about, but still.... fuck em... ignorant religious bastards. The holocaust was just one of many atrocities around the world. They are no more special than anyone else. Except that they are rich bastards and they wear funny hats.

Where in my post did I say that I did not have any prejudices?

I commented on the statements / beliefs of the Gibsons.

I would have loved to see the reaction of people had he used the N word, or if he slandered another religion or race.

You mean non-reaction.

they started out as work camps
towards the end of the war they became death camps
there's some numbers questions too

the irony of all "this" is that it's almost entirely due to religious differences
if there's an almighty god creator, that entity is beyond our human conflicts
if there's a god, many in Israel will be judged the same as hitler, and plenty of palestinians, hezbollah, hamas et. al.
if there's no god
none of this shit means a rat's ass anyhow, relatively

Israel - 'We Are Untouchable'
By Tanya Hsu
8-5-6

We are Israel. We are untouchable. No matter what we do the international community will not act against us. Oh, there will be talks at the United Nations but we know that the United States will intervene on our behalf. There will be Arab League discussions but we know that no state will take action against us. There will be mass protests and demonstrations; there will be activists and advocates begging for peace; there will be rallies and fundraisers to help the targets of our bombs. And we know that nothing will make a difference because we are Jews - we are victims of the Holocaust. We have suffered such that we have the right to make the rest of the world pay (even though organised Zionism officially declared war on Germany in 1933, long before Hitler's Final Solution). Because we are victims.

Yes, we know that peoples all over the world have suffered worse crimes than ours, but they were not the Chosen People. We know that over 22 million Russians were killed under Stalin, 15 million Chinese killed by the Japanese, millions elsewhere in the world who suffer the same fate in the bloodiest 20th century. We know that Zionism is an athiest Marxist creation using Judaism as its weapon; that we were founded upon terrorism and our leaders became Israel's prime ministers and Nobel Peace Prize winners; that less than 10% of Jews worldwide supported the Zionist cause for decades until WWII. We know that the crimes committed by Hitler equally affected Communists, gypsies, the handicapped, and political prisoners.

That does not matter - we are special. The rest of the world will not touch us because they are terrified of the label "anti-Semite". World leaders: terrified of this most glorious ad hominem even though we are mostly not Semitic peoples. Jews of Israel, the Sephardim Jews, were almost non existant when we arrived from Russia, Poland, Austria-Hungary and elsewhere in the 20th century and demanded Arab land. They had spread out and moved on. We did not come from Yemen, Ethiopia or Iraq, but who cares? We are the victims and that is all that counts.

Time and again we wonder at how far American gullibility will take us. We push it to the limits on cable television and get away with it repeatedly. We know that the majority of the world is aware we blatantly lie when we express our "deepest regrets" because "terrorists" were hiding in the villages we destroy. We even have the gall to pick the precise same targets as a decade ago, ignoring the cries of outrage from America and the West. We'll just repeat the mantra "a tragic mistake".

Honestly, we, too, are rather surprised to see that America patiently sits back and buys our words each time. We have trained our diplomats well, not only in the art of deception to the media, but by using powerful strong arm behind the scenes tactics to mold the views of US Congressmen and women in our favour. We have worked on this for decades and it has been perfected for the one place it counts: our bank America. We rely upon those weapons; we need to create constant conflict so as to receive a perpetual $13 billion annual aid package from the US, including unsecured loans that we have never been, nor ever will be, required to pay back. We are living a dream: what we want is given to us on a silver patter because we are Jews, and we have the Holocaust.

The above is only daring in that it is never voiced publicly in the West. The world is watching as Israel incinerates the Lebanese, next the Syrians and Palestinians, then Iran. Diplomats call for peace, a cease -fire, and negotiations. They speak the language of non committance. It takes a few brave men and women in leadership positions to dare to speak the truth; losing that AIPAC support in government is the kiss of death, and academics who dare write the facts know that their tenured careers are over. Israel is in the position of dominating the US government to an extent never before seen in history, creating a regime who will fully fund a "new Middle East" which in reality means Eretz Israel consisting of Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, northern Saudi Arabia and even Cyprus by some accounts. There is nothing speculative about these plans for hegemony - everything has been laid out, written down, and presented for years.

This war will not end with a cease-fire next week. This war will not end with a security zone controlled by the UN. This war will not end if Hezbollah and Hamas disappeared tomorrow. This war will not end as long as leaders and diplomats continue to fear the trump card charge of anti-Semitism by Israel.

So, when hundreds of children are torn apart by uranium tipped missiles provided courtesy of the US government, look in the mirror. Have you dared to offend Israel? Have you risked? Ask yourself what role you may have played in contributing to this global disaster. Nothing will change until you do.

The constant left wing attack from the Republics... Let's Leave American politcis out of this because Mel's comments has nothing to do with American politics. Anti-Semitism is not a political ideology is is a religious ideology.

Jewish folks have supporters on both sides of the fense from neo conservatives lobbyists to the anti defamation league..

MY opinion is that his comments were anti semetic and racist. I feel that this is the side effect of being ultra conservative. I feel that if one is too far to the left or right , then one could be outcast and seen as obscessive. We've seen what happens when people become obscessed with anti-abortion for example. At this point, the discussion is not about politics but more about decency.

Mel Gibsons comments most definitly crossed the decency line due to his views. Mel Gibson is not the US gov't. What Mel Gibson was going through with his movie and the ABC documentary that was canceled needs to come to light. The way the gov't handles Isreal is a separate issue from Mel's anti Semitic , anti Israeli comments. They should not be lumped together

You miss the point.

I was addressing the issue of the level of the outcry against what was said.

Cindy Sheehan and any number of left wing critics say far worse on a faily basis with hardly a mention. There have been politicians who have said largely the same, with far more inflamatory a phrasing than "the jews are responsible for all wars."

It is not a defense of his comments, but rather an opinion as to why they have received such media coverage.

I only saw the news stories saying that he had said something anti-semetic while being arrested for DUI and that he tried to get the jewish community behind him to make amends.

What exactly did he say? I missed that.

he acted like an ass at .12
anyone can be an ass when they're really intoxicated
but .12 for a self-admitted alcoholic isn't very high
and then there's the big difference betw being an ass to just anyone you might run across in a night's drinking, and being an ass to officer's who can/did place you under arrest
