I feel a little bad about this

Well i didnt think anything of it until the other manager came to introduce herself to me in my office (totally nice lady) and after a brief introductory discussion, she sneaks in the pumpkin contest and says "so....you voted against it? was there a reason why?"

Did the vote require unanimity to pass? Does your one vote against count as a veto?

If not, then what the hell is she concerned about? And how does she know how you voted? Prior to the encounter, did you know how she voted?

Happy employees/ content employees / employees that think their company goes beyond the call of nature are productive/efficient employees.

If they wanted to use it as a team building exercise while on the clock then that's super.

Wanting you to independently carve pumpkins on you own time then bring them in is ludacris. How does that boost morale? Oh wait you don't give enough time to work as it is so why not give homework too that counts for nothing.

Cheers,

don't feel bad. there was SOMEONE in the company who thought, "oooh, i'll think of some stupid thing for us to do to boost morale and then i can add that to my list of accomplishments at review time!"

I bet other people are wishing they hit reject too- because now they look like they're all into slacking off and you're not.

Don't know what slave factory you work in . Many companies have gatherings monthly or quaterly , Christmas parties at the office, bring in birthday cakes for people on the clock and yes decorate the work place seasonally.

I worked for lockheed martin assembly of f-16 and c-30 aircraft parts. The most boring job in the world. Even we had a special events Vendor fairs , a paper plane contest , ethnic expos from Native american speakers dancing around in funky clothes to a cowboy that came in and set up a plastic horse for us to rope. All paid for on the clock for 2 hours each month
It made work interesting to see diff people and diff things each month.
Humans need stimulation often throwing in something different such as a pumpkin contest allows employees to interact and feel a bond with one another as friends.Friends work together and with each other. When employees feel they are friends they stop talking shit about each other behind each others backs.
The pumpking contest places everyone on the same level no one is higher or lower then each other the employees work as a team to create the pumkins decor . Then show their pumpkins to other groups all on the same level everyone has a chance to win.

Pretty basic human nature people that like work and who they work with stay at that job .
People that don't leave . Then you have the work-o-holics that work themselves into the ground get nowhere and are looking for a new job every few years.
