I don't know about that.... Cause ever since my shoulder popped a few years back, I really can't do Military Press Free weight style without aggravating the injury..... So I use the Smith Machine, and it helps tremendously.... Not sure what it is about the motion on the Smith, but it helps my shoulder joint somehow.....

Maybe they just wanted to increase their lifts by a really really small amount so they wont injure themselves with their improper form.

I've been working really hard to ignore the new-year-resolutionists and so far it's working. Not many of them are using the squat rack for barbell curls...yet.
 
on a side note:

new guy comes into the gym, he goes to the smith machine,raises the bar to squat height,loads a 45# plate on each side,gets under it and begins to do what appears to be 1/4 squat 1/4 goodmorning, its hurting my back to watch him!
he is only squatting 1/4 the way down,he gets 6 HARD reps, he then racks it and puts a 25# plate on each side,waits a minute then gets under it again, he begins, one ugly ass rep of his squat/gm barely gets it and goes for another, on the way down he goes too far,and twists the bar so that on the way up it catches the latch BOOM! and down he goes!
i felt so bad after i stopped laughing,luckily he was not injured!
like the srg. said people just dont have any cognitive reasoning skills when they enter the gym!
 
now that we are bashing the dumbasses at our gyms, i figured i could share this one. This fat turd burnout kid, you know the highschool kids who think its cool to have long hair over their eyes and act really stoned all the time, walks in last night. ive seen him before but never really payed attention, but he got it last night. im doing bb rows, right next to the leg press, and here comes cheech looking all lost and shit. he loads 5 100lb plates on each side of the leg press, i wanted to burst out laughing, i couldnt believe what i was seeing. he doesnt warm up at all, just jumps right on, and he....oh wait....he put too much on, so he hops off and swaps one 100 for a 45. WTF!?! 10 mins later he works up the nerve to climb back in. i was so excited! i couldnt wait for this kid to impale himself with his knees! he pushes it off the safety pins...and....puts it back, and proceeds to rep it off the stops like 4 more times. GODDAMNIT!! i really was hoping smokey was going to try a full rep. Atleast he unloaded it, and then he left LOL. great workout

Ya i agree that those little "ballance bars" at the end are for pussys when on a smith.( unless they wanted to get an extra 10 opunces of wieght on the bar.lol) I though yal were calling me apussy for using safety stops..LOL....Safety stops are for men! If your not using safety stops your not workin hard enough!
 
I saw this one skinny guy at the gym the other day squatting 6 45s on each side (no smith machine) for 5 reps but only was going about 2 inches down. I honeslty thought he was going to kill himself. I think he was partially retarded. Oh yeah, his bench was only 135, so the bench to squat strength correlation was completely off. Just thought Id share this dumb story with all of ya!!
