I Can't Stand Myself!

Nelson Montana

Chairman of Board

I'm at the point in my life and bodybuilding journey that I no longer train to "get big at all cost." I don't beat myself up anymore. I weight train. I exercise. I maintain. But every now and then you have to do a "keep it real" workout to see just how far you can still push it.

For this reason I don't always do my own "Quick Calves" routine. My calves are as big as they're going to get so I usually just give them a perfunctory set or two of toe raise and be done with it. Well, the other day not only did I feel I needed a boost but I was short of time so I knocked out the routine in a couple of minutes, except that I didn't heed my own advice and stop at 75. I went to 100. Hell, it was easy.

I'M IN FREAKIN' AGONY!!!

Two days later I got out of bed and literally limped to the kitchen. Man, I needed that. I'd forgotten how intense that routine is!

I guess I have no one to blame but myself. :)

ever think there will be a day when u get older that u say fucK it and stop lifting? I always think about it & cant imagine it.

I wonder about this too and I can't imagine it either. For me, lifting isn't a phase or a hobby, its essential for me, like eating or breathing.

The only thing that worries me is whether or not my body can handle it when I'm older. I already have a messed up shoulder, a bad foot, and my knee hurts when I run or squat.

I hear a lot of guys who are proud that they're still hitting it hard in their 30's. Fuck, I see some guys in their 60's and 70's at the gym busting their asses. That's the mark of a real bodybuilder.

You have two choices. Keep lifting, or let the acceleration of age run you over.

I love it, puts a fire under my ass

Great quote bro. I agree completely.

It should actually make you feel good that you can crank out something like that while the average 40+ year old gets sore from having to walk a couple flights of stairs because the elevator is broken.

Knowing what to do and doing it are two different things. When it comes to other people you think rationally and logically and it's easy. But on ourselves with think with emotion and it's near impossible to pull back when you feel great.

Bad analogy, but watch Deal or No Deal sometime. Person has a 175,000 offer from the bank only the million dollar case left up on the board, plus 8 other worthless amounts. If they turn down the offer they have 2 cases to open. It happens 9 out of 10 times that they turn down the offer and 1 of the two that they open is the million dollar case. It is true that you only have a 1 in 8 and then 1 in 7 chance of opening that case, but damned if they aren't working off emotion and the good feeling they get from the audience when they turn that shit down. Anyway, back to the actual point at hand. Sorry.

The routine is brief, but intense. And it works. The first few times, you will feel as if someone is taking a cheese grater to your calves. It is insane. I love the feeling now, though I have to make sure that my bladder is empty before I do it - sometimes i'm afraid i'll piss my pants.

Lou never quit. Lives clean. That's the answer.

If that calve routine doesn't work, it doesn't matter, cause nothing else will work any better. Most everybody sees some progress with it. But it's gonna hurt ya.

was that your routine, i read of this a few months ago or maybe more, i don't remember who posted it but i remember people saying they got results with it. i do it religously and everytime i fucking do it it feels like my calves are fucking injured, seriously if someone were to kick my calves or if i banged them on something i'd be in fucking tears. my kids come up and grab my legs and i'm fucking jumping through the cieling. don't know if i'm seeing size gains yet, but weight is going up on them :)

Yeah, through years of trail and error I hit upon a discovery that at its core is pretty simple. With calves, it's all about time under tension. It's since become more and more accepted as the only way to train them.
It works best and takes the least amount of time so why bother doing anything else?

So true. I've showed the routine to a few guys at my gym. At first, they're like, "Wtf is this?" Then after the third set, "Oh fuck kill me now." I'm sure they leave thinking that I just showed them the dumbest shit they've ever seen. But then I have mine: about two days later I see them waddle into the gym like a penguin. And they're always amazed.

I read a study that caffine reduces the soarness of working out. I tried it and surprisingly it worked. Try it

75's are great, Thanks Nelson. Been mixing them in with other trad calf work & liking it. Will go to 100, thats got to be good for ya!

I like your second book better than your first, Bottomline Bodybuilding is AWESOME.

In some ways, I am a bit annoyed I have a set workout from my coach, otherwise I would be trying out a few things.

I may ask him if I can throw a few things in after I have gone through a few cycles of his plan.

Don't get me wrong, it is killer, but I love the sound of a few, the leg one is defo one that you would have to be psychologically prepared for.

Thanks Tat. Even though "The Bodybuilding Truth" is the better known and the bigger seller, a lot of people like Bottom Line more. I admit, I haven't done the leg one in a while myself. Meniscus surgery got me spooked, but it's time to get it going again.
