OTC stuff is usually based on doxylamine or diphenhydramine. They're both just anti histamines which make you drowsy, there's no quality to your sleep you're just not awake.
Ambien works good for short term insomnia for a lotta folks... it didn't for me.

yep, and you dont get much REM either. They work to make you ''sleep'' but it's not really restorative sleep. Stage IV doesn't go by that name anymore, it's just called S3 or slow wave sleep. Before stages 3 and 4 were called slow wave sleep.
