Personally, I'd write it off and chalk it up to a learning experience -- I'm guessing when you loaned him the money that you had a gut feeling that maybe it wasn't the right thing to do, but you went ahead and did it anyway?

There are ways to get $300 worth of satisfaction without direct confrontation.

Wait for him in the parking lot. Watch him leave and then follow him. Be sure to have some sort of weapon on you. Preferably a .45 if you do not have a gun any type of heavy object used for beating will do. Put the gun or other weapon being used in the crime and threaten to kill him until he gives you the money. If he doesn't have the money on him pistol whip him anyway and tell him you will be back to collect later. If he does have the money kill him anyway. If not go rob a bank with a cardboard cut out of your friends head and hopefully the authorites will arrest him. Good luck.
