How to Eat more protein

The thing that I have found that works so that you can digest more protein (say 80+ grams per meal) is GINGER ROOT. It has 180 times the protein digesting power of papaya.
I recently added 500-1000mg of ginger root right before each meal- digestion has NEVER been better.

EDIT::::

after extended use 1-2grams of a quality root powder (NOT EXTRACT) is a more "comprehensive" dosage.

note: AF now carries GINGER ROOT

Macro, any connection between increased digestiblity component and the use of ginger root as a homepathic remedy for stomach aliments? I've taken it occasionally for an upset stomach.

here is a little blurb

Active constituents: The dried rhizome of ginger contains approximately 1–4% volatile oils. These are the medically active constituents of ginger, and they are also responsible for ginger’s characteristic odor and taste. The aromatic principles include zingiberene and bisabolene, while the pungent principles are known as gingerols and shogaols.1 The pungent constituents are credited with the anti-nausea and anti-vomiting effects of ginger.

Digestive system actions: Ginger is a classic tonic for the digestive tract. Classified as an aromatic bitter, it stimulates digestion. It also keeps the intestinal muscles toned.2 This action eases the transport of substances through the digestive tract, lessening irritation to the intestinal walls.3 Ginger may protect the stomach from the damaging effect of alcohol and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (such as ibuprofen) and may help prevent ulcers.4

Anti-nausea/anti-vomiting actions: Research is inconclusive as to how ginger acts to alleviate nausea. Ginger may act directly on the gastrointestinal system, it may affect the part of the central nervous system that causes nausea,5 6 it may exert a dual effect in reducing nausea and vomiting. Double-blind research has shown that ginger reduces nausea after surgery,7 8 although one study could not confirm this benefit.9 However, the negative study has been criticized for short-term follow-up. Other studies have found ginger helpful for preventing motion sickness,10 11 12 chemotherapy-induced nausea,13 and nausea of pregnancy.14

Circulatory actions: Ginger also supports a healthy cardiovascular system. Like garlic, ginger makes blood platelets less sticky and less likely to aggregate; however, not all human research has confirmed this. A high amount (10 grams) of ginger can inhibit excessive platelet aggregation in humans,15 but lower amounts taken for longer do not seem to have this effect.16 17 This action reduces a major risk factor for atherosclerosis.18

i eat tons of protien and by the end of the day my belly is hanging over my knees....THANKS for the post

MACRO, where did you get the information concerning ginger's proteolytic activity compared to papaya? Papaya contains papain and bromelain, which are proteolytic enzymes. I have never seen any information stating ginger has this type of activity. I would be very interested.

couple of cut and pastes

Zingiber Officinale (Ginger)
ACTION

Antiemetic, Diaphoretic, Carminative, Circulatory stimulant, Anti-inflammatory, Antiseptic.

Ginger is an excellent remedy for digestive problems, such as flatulence, nausea, indigestion, intestinal infections and certain types of food poisoning.

The combination of sweat and circulatory stimulation allows ginger to move blood to the periphery. This makes it a good remedy for chilblains, high blood pressure and fever. Ginger inhibits platelet aggregation, therefore, should be the ideal condiment for people predisposed to clotting which may lead to either heart-attack or stroke (Srivastava, K.C. et al. 1964).

Ginger is also highly effective for motion and morning sickness.

KEY CONSTITUENTS

Volatile oils (bisabolene, cineol, phellandrene, citral, borneol, citronellol, geranial, linalool, limonene, zingiberol, zingiberene, camphene), Oleoresin (gingerol, shogaol), Phenol (gingeol, zingerone), Proteolytic enzyme (zingibain), Vitamin B6, Vitamin C, Calcium, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Linoleic acid.

The pungency of ginger is due to GINGEROL which is the alcohol group of the oleoresin (when resins are associated with volatile oils, they are called OLEORESINS). Ginger owes its aroma to about 1 to 3% of volatile oils, which are bisabolene, zingiberene and zingiberol.

GINGEROL
INDICATION

Magnesium, calcium and phosphorus function together in bone formation, muscle contraction, and nerve transmission. The high content of these minerals in ginger makes it a useful candidate for muscle spasms, depression, hypertension, muscle weakness, convulsions, confusion, personality changes, nausea, lack of coordination and gastrointestinal disorders.

The high content of potassium in ginger will protects the body against bone fragility, paralysis, sterility, muscle weakness, mental apathy and confusion, kidney damage, and damage to the heart. In addition to potassium's role in blood pressure regulation, it also regulates heartbeat.

Ginger has a high content of antioxidants. This makes it a free radical scavenger. This means, it has antimutagenic and anti-inflammatory properties (Lee, I.K. and Ahn, S.Y. 1985; Kikuzaki, H. and Nakatani, N. 1993; Kikuzaki, H. et al. 1994).

RESEARCH

In a study, acetone extract of ginger at 100 mg/kg p.o. significantly inhibited serotonin (5-HT) induced hypothermia. The active responsible was found to be shogoal. Shogoal, [6]-dehydrogingerdione, [8]- and [10]-gingerol were also found to have an anticathartic action (Huang Q, et al. (1990).

The pungent constituents of ginger release substance P from sensory fibres. The released substance P in turn either stimulates cholinergic and histaminic neurons to release Ach and histamine, respectively, or produces direct muscle contraction by activating M and H1 receptors correspondingly. It is proposed that after being excited by substance P, M and H1 receptors are inactive temporarily and unable to be excited by agonists, therefore, ginger juice exhibits anticholinergic and antihistaminic action. Ginger juice produces antimotion sickness action possibly by central and peripheral anticholinergic and antihistaminic effects (Qian, D.S, and Liu, Z.S. 1992).

Ginger also contributes enormous tonic benefit to the entire digestive system. Since optimal well-being depends upon healthy digestion, this is truly a valuable contribution. At least four studies from China and Japan demonstrate that ginger regulates peristaltic action--the wave-like movement of the muscles that push food and waste through the digestive system. Ginger further enhances digestive health through encouraging and nurturing the growth of beneficial flora in the intestines while simultaneously inhibiting toxic bacteria. These combined actions make it useful for both constipation and diarrhea. Research also shows that ginger enhances the digestion of both carbohydrates and protein, and stimulates bile secretion. Although papaya is a better known digestive aid, ginger's action is comparable, and more concentrated. Amazingly, it would take 180 pounds of papaya to equal the effect of just one pound of ginger.

Anatomy of Ginger

There are four main classifications of ginger's anatomy: pungency or taste; fragrance (essential oil); nutrients (macro/micro); and synergists.

Pungency - ginger's taste holds some of its most important medicinal qualities. It contains an oily-resinous substance called "gingerol." It has been broken down into about 30 elements, the most noted being the "gingerols and shogaols." Fresh ginger contains the "gingerols" but when exposed to air and heat change into the "shogaols," the more pungent of the two. This chemical change is one of the most important aspects of ginger's therapeutic value, and one of the more complex.

Fragrance - ginger's fragrance is a mixture of opposites: citrusy to sweet. The warm, spicy scent comes from its essential oil which makes up about 1.0 to 2.5% of the rhizome. 200 different components of the essential oil have been documented by British Researcher Brian Lawrence.

Nutrients - the nutritional value includes lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, many minerals and vitamins, plus trace nutrients. In some places it is used as a vegetable because it also contains potassium, phosphorus, vitamin C and riboflavin.

Synergists make up the last class with hundreds of ingredients which interact to produce ginger's ultimate effect. Within this category is a protein-digesting enzyme called "zingibain" acting very much like bromelain in pineapple. This enzyme is one of nature's richest proteolytic enzymes. Other constituents include capsaicin, curcumin and limonene which have an array of physical effects.

Thank you, MACRO. I was not aware of any proteolytic activity of this plant, and assumed that all of its digestive effects were from its "Dramamine-like" activity.

Awesome info... It is hard to slam 60 grams of protein at every meal... hopefully this helps.

Bump..

Oh and can you get ginger root in the form of Vitamin supplemant or do you eat actuall ginger root. I have not seen it at GNC thats why im asking...

capsules

twinlab
nature herbs
etc
etc.

they should have it at GNC,

but why would you ever pay those prices?

it should be between 5-9$ for 100 caps (500mg)

Great post man ..hopefully now i can come closer to my recommended dose of protien per day!

Do you think that it is OK, just eating the root that you buy in the grocery store?? I cook with that all the time, and it is cheap, if you can get the same benefits from eating, a few slices of the actuall root, that would be good!

Peace
Mavy

great post by the smartass!
im gonna need this when i hit my cycle (i can only usually cram down 150-200 grams or protien a day cuz im so damn buzy, but ill get some shakes to get it up to 200-250).

I'm interested in this for use with pgf2 to see if it helps with the nausea. protein digestion isn't so bad either.

http://www.nutritionexpress.com has 550mg caps, 100 @ $3.99 (Lindberg Ginger Root)
I'll be trying that out.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CANADA!!!!!!!!

Oh and thanks for the great info, I'm gonna buy some of that stuff at work tomorrow, I work at the Vitamin SHoppe ;)

WELL I HAVE AN OLDER BUDDY THAT GETS THE PRESCRIPTION FORM OF DIGESTIVE ENZYMES MADE BY ORGANON....I WILL DEF ADD THIS TO MY REGIMEN OF VITAMINS AND WHAT NOT....THANKS BRO.

Ginger is good for digestion, also quite good for digesting protein but there are better choices.

Pancreatic Enzymes will help with the breakdown of protein and reduce bloating and gas.

Peppermint oil is better for digestion than ginger and it also really helps with bloating and intestinal gas. If you can get the enteric coated peppermint oil softgels, this is the same substance as they use in hospitals to ease intestinal discomfort after a deep colonoscopy.

A cure-all is Betain HCL, this converts to hydrocloric acid and allows for better digestion of all food. Peppermint also stimulates the production of hydrocloric acid and natural enzymes.

also: Ginger is a diophoretic (makes you sweat more), I don' t know about you guys but the last thing I want to do is ne sweating more.

This is only my view, you are entitled to you own even if you are wrong:angel:

I wake up in the morning with a flat hard stomach and go to bed every night with a round bloated gut from shoveling protein down my gullet all day. Thanks Macro for the very useful info!!!

bump

this guy is great thanks macro ,u always gives us some great info!!
what about protien farts !? will they go away ?

I wonder if this also applies to the pickled ginger you get at sushi bars.... I always end up eating about 7-8 pieces of salmon and get hungry again within 20 minutes!

If you are having terrible digestion problems such as extreme bloating, you also may want to try Acidophilus, my massage therapist reccommended it, since then the intestines have worked perfectly. It is very inexpensive too.

With respect to Acidophilus
you are better off with a probiotic blend that contains all the bacterial flora- pro- dophilus- is a product that I have used.

But Ginger helps improve the enviroment for Flora- I have to admit that I have been pretty impressed with this inexpensive herb.

Btw- peppermint is good for digestion, but it is NOT proteolytic and is a good addition to ginger- not a replacement

macrophage69alpha I wanted to 2nd your motion for ginger root , after i read this post i went 2 GNC and got 90 caps for $7.00 cant beat that .and i used it all day and i am very happy and just wanted 2 say good looking out bro :D

I have purchased ginger extract before from Beyond-A-Century.com, which carries a standardized ginger extract powder for cheap. Ginger is a versatile herb, and should be cheap due to its abundace. Try to get a good standardized version.

I've been using it since this post and two immediate things I noticed. 1. My appetite is up 2. My bathroom visits are up. It works, no doubt.

Something I would have never learned without the use of this board. Keep the useful info coming:D

GINGER ROOT WORKS!

BUMP!!!!
I bought Ginger root when I first read this post. I used to start getting GI probs anywhere above 250g of protein. Since I started Ginger root, I have bumped it up to around 350. I even got 415 yesterday, and not even a protein fart. I have been taking 2g throughout the day. Thanks for the info bro!:D

GINGER
cheap
and
effective

for those of you that like syntrax- their new product- mm44- is little more than a ginger extract- at 5 times the price

peace

Just read in the paper that there has been 4000% increase in the sales of Ginger Root thanks to Macro?

LC

The first day I read this I put my whole portfoilio in a ginger company and then provided this info. over on the stock chat boards. I've made 600% on my money in a week! Thanks Macro. Bling, Bling
just j/k but I did go out and get some and it does seem to help alot!

I've been using 1000mg before meals ever since I read this post. So far so good!

Thanks for the info mp69. I felt like I was going to explode from gas and pain after my shake last night and I'll be using this religiously now. Coincedentally, I used some ginger ale a few hours later which seemed to remedy the problem within minutes...I guess even some of the active ingredients are present in the soft drink (although this isn't the best idea to getting your daily intake of digestive enzymes).

Just bought some ginger root cause it was like $3.50 for 100 caps, 500mg cheap , my question is how do you know it helps with absorption? Less gas, less bloat, different bowl movements... Just curious, always looking for something different. Like flax oil, I can definetly tell that works as a fat burner and regulating things. like shitting. call it FLAXative

thx, bros

This info wil help me greatly for my next cycle... this should be made sticky... mods??

Great fucking post macro, first the yohimbe post now this... you are an anabolic god.
