How often do you read (books)

Patsfan made a great point in another thread, many people use little summaries or opinions on google as a replacement for reading thoroughly researched books from experts or reputable sources. Wikipedia is a great example. Good for quick information, but not good for comprehensive history or facts.

My grandma used to read every night and when I'd stay at her house over the summer I'd do the same. In high school and college I didn't read anything except textbooks for studying, but after college I got back into the habit of reading every night, even on vacations I take a book and try to get at least 15-20 mins in before bed. I vary my reading material usually something informative follwed by something fun. Sometimes when I get a really good book I'll stay up until 2 or 3am reading and pay the price the next day. Sometimes I'll spend an entire day on the weekend and burn through an entire book.

Do you read and what were the last few books you read? Here is my latest list:

We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will be Killed With Our Families: Stories from Rwanda (AMAZING book, depressing, but a must read)

I'm reading more than I have been - I think I've finally grown bored of the internet and have begun to miss the smell of a freshly cracked open book.

Just bought it haven't started reading it.

How Doctors Think
http://www.amazon.com/How-Doctors-T...d_bbs_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1201124343&sr=8-2
I read this one last year:

How We Die
http://www.amazon.com/How-We-Die-Re...bs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1201124751&sr=8-1

GREAT book, seriously A+++ sounds morbid, but its actually the opposite if you ask me. Both my parents read it after me and loved it. If you have lost any loved ones, grandparents, etc. This really puts it in perspective, lets you know exactly what was going on physiologically. The author is what makes this book superb. Very talented. Without him the topic would be dry as unbuttered toast.

I'm always reading. I read mainly non-fiction -- lots of motivational type stuff, stuff about financial planning, how to books, etc.

See, just another reason why I like you.

The god is not great is a good book though, also, have you read "The God Delusion" similar, but more science based, this one isn't quite so much based in science, more based in "what the fuck are people thinking?

The other books I read "How we know what isn't so" and "why people believe weird things" aren't all about religion, but give insight into how those beliefs come to be and are maintained.

always now.....but only in the last year, year and a half. usually on specific subjects though. Stuff that applies to my life and i can use.

i read a ton of motivational/self help/spiritual stuff. i hate that term self help, because it sounds somewhat derogatory and can emcompass so many things.

I also read a ton of marketing books, as well as sales.

psychology is the other category i follow pretty closely.

I keep my head out of the facts. I like to make outrageous claims and false accusations. It's much more fun and less demanding of my brainpower.

One is a Bukowski book, the other is a Stephen King book called On Writing.

Just finished the latest Bret Easton Ellis novel called Lunar Park.

Reading is truly one of the greatest pleasures in life, IMO.

How was that one?
I was eyeballing that one too.

Weird (kind of a requisite with his novels tho). In a different way than his others. From my book review thread:

Lunar Park (Bret Easton Ellis)
I have read all his other books, this was the last one on the docket. Written quite strangely, to the point that you don't really know what is fact and what is fiction. It's clearly written with Bret as the narrator and the first part of the book discusses his past, which of any of you know him, is very interesting and laced with debauchery and self-hate (thanks to daddy). Then it gets into the typical Ellis type novels, with an odd mix of science fiction, torrid self reflection and love story. I really enjoyed it. His novels are always good for an interesting ride - at times his stories are almost too weird to take seriously and at others you actually feel the fright that he so often discusses. The ending loops the first part of the story (I hate my daddy and it's ruining my new life as a father) back in and addresses it pretty well. Read it.

Me too. If I sit and stare at my personal library and think about all the titles long enough it makes me very emotional. The titles themselves read like a book on the shelf of what I have been doing in life.

Right now I am ordering this:
http://www.amazon.com/Into-Mist-Deb...bs_sr_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1201125092&sr=8-3
The topic sucks but it's a must read for me sadly.

Also, I am constantly reading to my kids. They learn so much from books and have many memorized and they "read" to each other with a flashlight everynight when they are supposed to be asleep. Literacy is Priceless, or in their case pretending to be literate is at least pretty cute.

I liked that Stephen King On Writing book.

velvett said:
Really, maybe I'll wait on that one.
It was going very well until I hit the chapter about some of the conflicts in Africa where they kidnapp the children as young as 8 years old and train them (brainwash) to fight for the "Lords Resistance Army" that is lead by a "prophet" who talks directly to god and receives revalations.

I can usually handle anything, but the thought of this kids being forced to kill their own families or friends is tough to handle right before bed. Fucked up my sleep one night.

I'd read more if (non-fiction) books were the be all/end all concerning truth, but since they're not it's more of a novelty than anything. Opinions are opinions no matter what form they're in. The internet is much quicker/easier/expansive.

He offers up some good advice and some insight into his style. He is just so darn prolific. He was born to write.

I'm not much of a celebrity hound but I do have an autographed copy of "The Shining" in which he signed, "Shine on, Heather ~ Stephen King." I think that is pretty cool.

I grew up reading Stephen King! have read dozens of his books.

Since college I almost always read non fiction, feels like its feeding my brain for lack of a better anaology.

I only read non-fiction.

I read enough fiction here from all the females.

I tend to just prefer non-ficition. I tend to get bored of novels unless they are very, very good.

you ever get real bogged down in a book? you hate it and can't make sense of it but you keep plugging along?
last few books have been like that...i never quit a book w.o reading the whole thing...but these last two sucked, a auto bio about picasso and a literay study of ww1

happens ALL the time bro. I just punt it. No sense in slogging through a book if you are not enjoying it or getting anything out of it.

"Breaking the Spell" is a great example. That book is about freeing yourself from religion, i thought it'd be right up my alley right? Wrong, couldn't get through two chapters of that bitch. Sucks, the topic is on point but the writer is too dry.

When I find a great book its usually because of the writing style. On any topic (especially something like WWI) there are going to be tons of books, the ones that separate themselves from the pack are the ones that are:
1) well written and easy to digest
2) thoroughly researched
3) have the least amount of author bias

I've only twice put a book down without ending it.

Once was a shitty author I don't even remember. I can tell rather quickly if I will enjoy an author and typically keep to a select few and certainly a certain genre. This one cat just didn't do it for me.

The other was To Catch a Fire. It was just so damn long. I don't get much into biographies, tho I've read a few (Joe Torre, Frank Sinatra, Oasis, Buddha). I was younger tho, so maybe I wasn't ready for it. It still sits on my book shelf mocking me....

For the record, both brothers sing. Liam is lead, tho. I love it. It's fucking aggressive. Most people haven't heard 90% of their shit, just the watered down pop stuff (Wonderwall, Supernova, All Around the World - all great songs tho).

It was a shite watered down commercial song that Noel never wanted released. And it was written for Noel to sing (which he has on several occasions).

Awesome band, the last two albums are mandatory. The first two are completely different and I personally didn't care for them. Band started by Duncan Patterson who was known for his work with Anathema.
