How much do you clean and jerk?

I work my way up to 185 for 8. Also i hear some talking about it being 3 motions but i do it in two. Whats your feeling on it?

What you've heard about it being "3 motions" is probably someone doing a bad job of describing the "sequence" of movements (ie: 1st pull, 2nd pull, etc), or you not interpreting correctly.

I agree it is probably the description of the phases of pulling.....by definition, a C and J is lifting the bar from the floor to overhead in 2 motions......a snatch is doing it in 1 motion.

All correct, although of course it depends on what you define as "1 motion." For example, in Artie Dreschler's "The Weightlifting Encyclopedia," Artie breaks EACH of the snatch, the clean and the jerk into six distinct phases. More simply, the snatch and clean may be seen as consisting of (i) a first pull (to the knees), (ii) a second pull (to full extension), (iii) the drop under the bar and (iv) recovery (i.e., standing up with the weight). The jerk is "dip-and-drive."

Regardless of how you break it down for analysis, each is performed as a single fluid movement.

On another note, C&J's for sets of 8 is awfully high. It's hard to maintain solid form for 8 reps, and solid form is critical in the O-lifts (bad form can put you on your back for a month!). You would probably find you get more out of them if you focused on 1's, 2's or at most 3's, and focused on pushing up the weight while maintaining solid form.

Have to disagree with you here. The Snatch is indeed one fluid movement. The C&J has a definitive pause in the catch position after the clean.

I didn't say the snatch wasn't a fluid movement, but it is most definitely comprised of several distinct phases. The C&J consists of two separate movements (the clean and the jerk), each of which may be broken into several phases.

The phases are important for several reasons. First, they are necessary to learn how to properly perform the movements, and learning how to maximize the lifts. Second, they allow the athlete to train specific components of the lifts to bring up their weaknesses.

Either way, I think you and I agree: each of the three lifts is performed in a single, fluid movement.

Well, the Clean is a single movement, but the clean AND jerk is 2 movements.

Right. The clean is one movement and the jerk is another movement. Together, they are two movements. When you add the snatch, you get three movements (or 18 phases).

I can't even tell if you guys are arguing with me or not anymore.

Truthfully, I don't clean near as often as I ought to. My house is a mess. But I am a jerk most of the time so it all works out. It's circular. Balance, man. The way of the universe. You dig?

As a wise man once said, nothing is more effective at getting a jerk to start cleaning than a good snatch.

now that is poetic.

Thanks, and thanks for running another great meet over the weekend in Wichita Falls! BTW, I'm Michael Cooley (I took 1 lift each in the 85kg class).
