How many of you have adult ADD / ADHD... How many of you had it as a child.

I don't know much about the condition.

What I have noticed is that when I was kid we just had the weird quite kid, the glue sniffer, nose3 picker, miss chatty pants, spoiled rotton brat, sci-fi geek and the deligent brainiac kid,

No one was labeled with a disorder and there we no lines to get your afternoon dose of meds.

I didn't know we were in the same class, thought I was a little older than you. ;)

The ADHD afflicted population has a 15 times higher prevalence of genius-level IQs than the general population.

My cousin is ADHD and one of the smartest people I know. During family reunions at the age of 10, he could answer 90% of the 'lateral thinking' brain teasers/IQ questions we would entertain ourselves with. Cognitive development doesn't even complete until 17 or 18. The guy easily has an iq of 165++

What does he do for a living? Bounce from one minimum wage paying job to another because he can't consistently exert sufficient attention necessary to hold a more demanding job.

And people say ADHD is a 'myth'. Vastly over diagnosed, Yes. Myth, no.

I would love to help that guy out. Are there any new treatments available?

I think that....wait what were we talking about? I was just distracted by a commercial on tv gotta go for now had something to do but I forgot before I got to the door...

I think it is more a symtom of the type of society we have developed into... 30 sec info, never enough time, too much to do... etc.

I am sure I would have been diagnosed and drugged as a kid. Kids are hyper, inattentive and easily distracted because so much is new to them, they need more challenges mentally and physically, which gets us to parenting and the type of education we are receiving which is a whole different thread.
I used to get into trouble at school for not turning in homework...remember the week long same type of assignments for math, science etc? I got it the first time around in class, then would do the homework for the next few days but leave them in my locker at school instead of turning them in to the teacher. Had to find something interesting to do. Then it would po the teacher when I could test in the top of the class.
I could probably still be diagnosed with it, would I ever take the drugs... hell no! I would just find more to do with my time and imagination.

I have the attention span of a fruitfly but I don't think it's a clinical thing. I've always wondered tho

DT... I have a friend exactly the same...I have tried to get him to read some of the funnier or more interesting threads here but he can't get through the first four posts then starts scrolling down as fast as possible.
I think it has more to do with bong resin slowing down his comprehension than adhd though. I am sure he would be up for the meds if they gave a "high".

I never used to believe in ADHD, I thought that it was just a parents way of "dealing" with their children. Well I then had children of my own. As Crak600 said our daughter is the classic ADHD child. It took a few years for me to accept that this might be the cause of her constant mood swings, inattention to event the smallest detail, falling behind in school, not caring about anything that does not involve her, and the constant fight for attention. I never wanted to medicate my poor child, and it took me a long time to agree to do it. The change in her was great, of course it is not a cure all and there still has to be behavior modification but overall it has been good for her.

Dont get me wrong, I do not care if she is hyper I want her to be a child. I do however want her to be able to focus in school and to keep up with her peers. Her doctor got "medication happy" on her and kept switching her meds this year, and because of this she is now having to repeat first grade. I think that it will be good for her though because we now have her back on a medication that we know works, and over the summer we can play the whole "stabalizing" game with medication.

No parent ever wants to admit that their child has a problem, but sometimes you just have to accept it for the welfare of the child.

Right, That word did not exist when i was in school- I was accused for everything from not paying attention to not listening finally i was forced to wear hearing aids.
Not that they really helped but the loud noise they ampflied really kept me on my toes.

I hear you Cutiepie...
I am not trying to say the condition doesn't exist, but I very much believe that it is way over diagnosed for whatever reason. Much like the simplicity of getting pain meds in this country... Hell I was given 30 Vicodain for a cracked tooth which I lived with for about 2 months until I went to see the dentist. He asked me how the pain was and I said what pain? He told me it would get worse and handed me the script...

Yes, I most definetly agree that a lot of children are way over diagnosed. I have seen parents come into the doctor and say "my child is hyper fix him/her". Thus they get thrown on ADHD meds and are like zombies. You can definetly tell when a child is not supposed to be on the meds. Poor kids. (:
