Open the black plug thing like you are going to pour liquid into the cup. Hold it under the faucet and fill it with water that way. My mother has one of them.

No silly, some yellow crud appears to be in that pic you posted. Look BEHIND the worthless kettle, there is a glob of crap on the back wall or a rusty screw holding up the back splash of the counter.
