if your email address is published anywhere it can be done. or if a db with your email address has been acquired by a spam house. its not difficult and shitty filters wont catch it.

my throwaway email account always gets email from itself, it's just fake. sometimes i also get emails with the date months in advance so it will automatically be the first email to show, also on the throwaway. spammers are tricky, they can fake ebay, paypal, etc, and make it look legit easy.

how cum if it's sent from my own inbox it doesn't show up in "sent items"?

It was sent by someone else, but they spoofed the sender's name and date.

Email is routed from servers all over the internet. All it takes is one rogue sender introducing the email and it will be picked-up and delivered.

Some IT type Mo at work told me it had a different date because it came from overseas

A better question is why do they send it? I mean, does anyone ever really buy their shitty viagra V1@gr@ \/Iagr@ or how ever else they fuck up the spelling?

its estimated that spam could generate up to $3.5 mil usd per year.

dunno who backs that figure, but spam costs money to create and if there was no profit, it would cease to exist.
