How bad is cardio before weights?

Where is the hard core research to prove 30 mins of cardio first is no good for somebody who's only goal is to burn fat?

if you only have enough energy for a 1 hour session you can

(a) use energy for cardio then drag ass through the resistance training

or

(b) use energy for weights and drag ass through cardio.

Many people think the "cardio after weights" came about because bodybuilders simply hate doing cardio.

I'll bet not one person on this forum does cardio first but I'm just curious to know if you think it really makes a huge difference.

NOTE: I am not making the argument FOR cardio first.

I guess the answer probably lies in what school of thought you buy into. Does more muscle mass burn more fat or is it more effective to try and blast it off during cardio?

Do you think it is more effective to try and use intense lifting to start tapping into glycogen first and then hope that you burn fat for energy during cardio - or - put all your energy into a personal best 6 mile run and then hit weights for a little extra.

I can't see the benefits of cardio first. I frankly don't see the benefits of doing one right after the other either. I run 20-30 miles per week and I can't imagine doing one right after the other regardless of the order.

It's almost like asking which is better. Jerking off and then having sex or having sex and then jerking off?

There is very little hardcore evidence for any exercise protocol simply for the fact that there are too many variables. There comes a point when you have to use empirical evidence, logic, personal experience and good instincts to make the right choices.

Since I'm not a fan of cardio anyway, I'd say it wouldn't make a tremendous difference either way but again LOGIC suggests that you won't be going "all out" if you're trying to conserve energy for the workout and "holding back" is not the best approach to success. At least doing it afterward, you can wind down until you feel as if you've had enough and then quit, knowing that the majority of your effort was with the weighs -- which is what makes the most difference.

I dont know about any one else but for me a good run gets me going most of the time...many times I have don a work out was wasted.got on the tred mill ran for 30 mins got off and was like fuck I think ill work out some more.

I do 30min before work out some times to and it dos wake me up loosen my up and get me ready to blast out weights.

Good point also. It's like when people ask me which routine is best. I tell them "the one you DO!"

I like to refer to the instinctive training.more people should learn about this...I keep a note book and right everything down from a-z about every day of my life.the more you know about your self and your body the better off you will be.over time you will learn whats has worked for you and what will work for you.

The release of endorphins, cannaboids, dopamine....They get released like nothing else when you run. That must account for the great feeling and wanting to work out more. Nothing wrong with that.

love it.

Do you have good muscle mass bro?
A lot of runners are skinny with too much body fat.
I ran a 10K race last year and when they handed out the money for the winners I looked at all those guys and thought fuck I do not want your physique. The bastards should all be on anavar or something LOL.

Anyway, how has running affected your physique?

i dont do cardio first as i want all the energy i have to lift these heavy ass weights
when all my readily available energy is burned off 45 mins later, i then hit the cardio which should tap into my fat stores for fuel

There is a lot of good information here. There is great arguments for and against. I guess it comes down to what your goals are. I run a half mile to warm up and then I hit the weights. When my weight session is over, I end doing another mile and a half on the treadmill. My goals are to burn fat, increase strength and endurance. It seems to be working well. I think it is your own choice as to what you need to do to accomplish the goals you set.

one OF THE mOST shredded guys I have ever seen did 1 hour on the Step MILL THEN lifted after

granted he was on Var, Deca, Winnie and Test but that was the way he did it when he competes in MuscleMania

all these posts are nothing but speculation

it's without question proven the body's preferred energy is glycogen and if glycogen is available, it will be used. you will burn glycogen if you're doing cardio beforehand...especially something high impact like running. if you have limited glycogen, of course your lifts will suffer

i did cardio before my lifting a few years ago(without really understanding the science behind it) and noticed a tremendous drop off in my strength and endurance.

Yer much better for endurance .

well that explains it.I got plenty of glycogen lol

I just got back from the gym and did 20 minutes (4 miles) on the bike b-4 I hit the weights. I do this 5 times per week evertime b-4 I work out. I have a nasty shoulder injury from baseball that I have agggrivated in the past due to insuffecient warm ups. Since I started cardio on the front end, no injuries. I also am trying to lower my body fat % for my first cycle and hitting the bike first has definitely helped.

I don't know much about glycogen and all of that stuff, I'm learing here everyday, but in the last 3 moths I've lost 2 notches on the belt and my strength continues to go up. Plus, during my workout I sweat more and hopefully burn more fat.

First cycle starts in 12 days. Sust E3D, 500ml's per week. Yeah boyyyeeee.
