--accident happen on November 11
-- be going to p/t ever since then. and still going..

I don't know the extent of your injury so I can only comment on
myself. I had the same exact thing (but with 4 discs) with 1 disc
protruding onto the nerve. I thought I would never walk again.
Out of commision (TOTAL) for a year. Had to get major spine surgery. The only things I can recommend you STAY away from are
deadlifts, clean & jerks and bent rows. If your going to eventually
do squats, try hacks for a while until you feel better. Also, try
hyper-extensions. They work WONDERS for strengthening the
lower back. Good luck and feel better.

I had the same problem, herniated l4-l5 disc. I was not able to lift for over a year, but if I knew then what i know now i would have had a much quicker recovery. Keep in mind every back injury is different so you got to monitor how your body reacts to different exercises. For me I was not able to do hyper-extensions without severly irritating my lower back, so I had to find a different approach. I actually avoided all exercises that compress the spine for a period of about 1 year (no squats, cleans etc). After about 3 years I started doing deadlifts (light at first) and within a few months made remarkable progress, but that was not my key point ...

The most important thing I did for my recovery however was something my doctor told me to try but I thought he was crazy. I rigged up a home traction kit. I basically took a pair of jeans and made them into some cutoff shorts, then I tied some nylon rope to the back belt loop holes and tied a couple 10 lb plates to the ropes. The weights hang over the footboard of your bed and apply gentle traction to your spine while you sleep. Doesn't seem like much, but those weights will stretch on your back and you will usually wake up at about 3 or 4 in the morning and have to take the shorts off due to soreness. This gentle stretching doesn't seem like it would work, but after just 1 week my nerve pain was much less, and after a couple of months it was totally gone. This was the point where i was able to really work out again and regain my spinal strength.

You don't need to wear the traction every night either just maybe 3 or 4 times a week did it for me. If you get really sore just layoff for a while. Believe me though, the soreness was nothing compared to the nerve pain. i welcomed the soreness!

Also don't go to a chiropractor. I tried that route as well and he really messed up my upper spine and neck.

In my opinion chiropractor's aren't real doctors.. go see a neurosurgeon ...ask him about what exercies you should do..trust me brother potential nerve damage is something you do not want..

all you guys are fucking morons..um, damage to the spine=a chiropractic issue..if you fucking retards havent noticed or have heard, chiro's hav over 400 hours focused on this.

not a real doctor? fuck you asshole..what are you? I bet you barely have a bachelors if that..and whats your major? thats what i thought dumb fuck.

You guys are just mad cuz your lazy, dumb asses cant even handle the amount of neurophysiology, anatomy, and learning all the nervous systems throughout the body...or learning every bone, joint, tendon, ligament, and nerve in teh body...

yeah chiro's arent real doctors..what the fuck ever..

my opinion

I have a herniated L5/S1 that cuaed me a great deal of pain from when I was 30 to about 35. I was miserable and considering surgery.

I went to see a physical therapist who specializes in some thing called the McKenzie technique who really helped me. When i asked him what I could or could not do he looked at me like I was crazy. He said that as long as I did my back exercises I could lift heavy without any added concern, as long was my form was PERFECT. I also quit playing golf as I thought that could be contibuting to my problem and occasionally do see a chiropractor with good results.

I now lift 5 days a week and routinely do heavy Smith squats and leg presses with no discomfort (other than my quads about to explode).

You can buy a book written by Robin McKenzie called Treat Your Own Back that describes the exercises. You can get it from Amazon or any Relax Your Back store.

Good Luck!

Damn Cockdiesel, I just sent you a pm complimenting you on
your post of a CKD. I can see why a lot of people think your a
FUCKING MORON!....BEcause you are!! A little 23 year old wet
behind the FUCKING EARS PUNK! God bless you for what you
achieved with your body, but what your saying here by calling these guys (INCLUDING ME, FUCKNUT) assholes just plain SUCKS!
I was almost crippled because of this injury that you probably
think you could have cured with your chiropractic backround right?
Get a fucking clue. I tried every fuckin avenue I could at the time
(Chiro's included) and the ONLY option was surgery. In fact, I
got my surgery at the Hospital for Special Sugery in NY. Have
you every heard of it?..probably not. The head of the Neurology
dept. told me that Chiropracter's should be banned from the
planet! After all, YOU DOUCHE, what fucking purpose does it
serve to get your back and neck manipulated in those ways? Yeah, it feels good right? To everybody else, sorry for being so
nasty but this guy just pissed me the fuck off with his stupidity.

I have the same thing at L4,L5. It got me kicked out of the military in '95 when I could barely tie my shoes without hitting the floor. Now I'm deadlifting over 500# and SLDL off a block 405 for reps. Just so you know that you can overcome the crap if you're smart about it. Good Luck

Dude,

You must be on a FINA cycle right now. You're very irritable. I can tell you for a fact that my chiropractor was a quack. He sprained my neck on my very first cervical adjustment. Had me in a neck brace for 2 weeks and I still have neck pain today and it's been about 9 years now since the injury. But I guess there's no point rationalizing with an imbesile

fuck you too Kakdiesal!!..do chiropractors have MD on thier degrees?..ever heard of a chriopractor from Duke or UAB school of medicine..trust me brother stay away from the guys who are good at "popping your back"..go see a neurosurgeon

BTW

I have a MBA but any fuckin moron knows that chriopractors aren't doctors ..

forgot to add I had a hernitated disc at C-4 C-5..did extensive nerve damage to my right 5th cervical nerve ..there for inflicting server nerve damage to my deltoid, bicep, and superplanatos (sp) of my right arm..in order to correct the problem I had a the disc removed and the vertabrae fused..

take my advice don't fuck around with this type of injury see a "real" doctor ASAP...good luck!!

guess what? I had the same herniated disc

(L4-L5) some 4 years ago. Unfortunately the docs could not find what happened to me. So on day 11 i walked to the gym and started training again (hehehe). My work was some 300 yards from the gym and it took me 15 minutes to get there.
So i did feel the same as you guys. As Thaibox says, you can overcome this.

But the mean reason i am posting here is ..... well Kakdiesel, you are out of line here.

I don't see any morons in this thread, so you could offer your excuses for what you said. Nobody diserves to be threated that way.

Jeff

Jeff- I am glad both you and Thaibox were able to overcome
your injury. I have to disagree with you on this one. That is too
general of a statement (you can overcome this) to say to somebody who's injuries were/are probably more serious then
yours (and Thai's) were. I speak from expierience because my
life was basically ruined from this injury. I was in pain 24/7 and
used to cry myself to sleep asking why me every single night!
When one of the best doctors in NYC told me I will never be
able to walk right again without surgery, I said fuck it, I can't live
like this. So, there are many different degrees of injuries when
it comes to herniated discs. The one thing that I can say we ALL
pretty much agree on (except kakdildo) is to stay FAR away
from a chiropracter.
