(help) why is my slow pc?

Let’s see if you can figure this out. I built my pc like a month ago, everything is new. just So you don’t ask, it’s a 2.5 processor and I have 256ram.

Anyways, all of a sudden within the last 2 days or so, EF drags like a mofo. I can type “hello” in a thread, and I can count to 10 before the words appear on the page. I don’t what the deal is. The reason I know it’s my pc and not my cable is because I have a pc networked to this one and it runs fine, doesn’t lag a bit when I go to EF. I’ve ran Norton, and another scan program, also lovasoft spy ware software, and it finds nothing.

I can tell that my pc lags a bit all around, but the main way I can tell is when I get on here, and it goes freakin limp man, deathly slow. Any ideas? I have my page file/system memory to automatically so adjust as needed

I had the exact same prob with my system here at work but a little worse. Have you tried typing in word yet? If not, see if it does it in there. My probs started when typing online then it slowly began to spread to everywhere. Unfortunately I ended up having to reimage my system. Maybe try and reinstall IE? Since you ran virus scan and a spyware detecting software which didn't help, you may end up having to reformat. Hopefully someone can help

1) 256MB RAM on XP is barely enough to run just the services - especially if you have XP Pro.

2) if you are running programs, they eat up RAM and processor

3) if you have used all of the allotted RAM, then it has to cache out to the hard drive - which is slow and takes up processor time as well - you would hear the hard drive running usually.

You can right click on the task bar and then choose "task manager" from there.
Under the Processes view, sort things by CPU from highest to lowest (usually takes two clicks) and see what is using CPU.
then sort my RAM from highest to lowest (again, probably two clicks, the first sorts it lowest to highest) and see what is using the most RAM.

You can also add "threads" to the columns on which it tracks to see if individual processes are grabbing a lot of threads.

You can also click on the performance thing and see a graphical representation.

I would imagine that if you have Norton on your machine and you have real time protection enabled, that is likely what is hogging it.
It is a double edged sword - it makes your system useless to have it on, but if you don't and you are retarded, then you can get a virus easily.

I would imagine that if you have Norton on your machine and you have real time protection enabled, that is likely what is hogging it.
It is a double edged sword - it makes your system useless to have it on, but if you don't and you are retarded, then you can get a virus easily.

great ideas, but why would this all of a sudden happen? it worked fine for 3 weeks, then boom, slow at hell for no reason, didnt install any new programs or softeware or anything, plus my other pc is slower and has less ram, same OP, but runs faster

That sounds like it could be the prob but he said it just started happening within the passed couple days. If RAM was the issue, he should have had the prob all along. Unless he added and change something within the passed couple days. Any applications installed lately?

Try this

tools->internet options->general tab->accessibility-->
user style sheet->format documents using my style sheet and uncheck the box.

Also, try running Spybot... Ad-aware does not find everything... you need spybot and ad-aware...

onboard video? I was thinking maybe the vid driver became corrupt for some unknown reason. I don't know man. Maybe try to do a system restore back to before it started happening?
