Sofa: One last thing, I did try your advice and looked for some evidence on line that using an alcohol swab to prep an injection site had no effect but did not have any luck. Since you are able to find these studies hence your advice, help a guy out here and post a few, thanks.

Your argument that it is common knowledge that this is the correct way to do things is akin to the "fact" that it is common knowledge that we need 8 glasses of water a day or that poverty leads to high crime rates.

Common knowledge and common useage doesn't mean a lot.

Do you remjember the uproar in the '80s when Reagan made the "idiotic" statement that "trees caused pollution." Everybody knew that had to be wrone. Right?

Sofageorge,

What are you talking about? Alcohol pads/wipes or cotton balls and alcohol solution are an effective way of killing bacteria. By th eway most Alcohol wipes contain 70% isopropyl alcohol. As long as the area is pre cleaned using soap etc or washed recently, and you rub isopropyl alcohol on it for about 30 seconds covering the entire area from top to bottom side to side and in a circular motion( which is the corect paramedical, and physician procedure) the area will be considered sterile. Of course alcohol doesent kill all types of microorganisms but it will kill all the ones the human body will get sick from such as numerous bacteria that are located on the skin etc. Your body has numerous bacteria inside that the imune system kills on a regular basis. I think your statment is realy stupid and you should take it off as i personaly dont care but a newbie or someone can read this and say" fuck swabing" then have an infection etc. If you dont think swabing is necesary i encourage you to reuse your pins and needles too..their the same right..cant kill the bacteria anyways ........ This thread is so idiotic it makes me sick...you are an idiot ...

<GRIN> I see that you have been to the nelson montana school of debating! :) Whatever are you talking about? My argument is that there is an abundance of published studies that establish 70% isoproply as an effective disinfectant and that EVERY, not a few but EVERY medical text and nursing text and EMT, and MEDIC training document I have come across, that would be hundreds of them, instruct the nurses, doctors, emt's, paramedics, and medics to use an alcohol prep(or something equivalent) prior to injection. I guess that would make it into the realm of common knowledge among medical professionals. Is it the holidays or are folks just not able to argue without incredible non-sequitors? poverty leading to high crime rates? Huh? The response you quoted from me simply asked YOU to provide in support of your opinion some study or justification demonstrating that 70% alcohol does NOT act as a disinfectant, I did a medline search and found literally hundreds that indicated that it was, surely if you are correct it should not be so difficult to support your views with some solid infromation other than off the wall illogical comparisons like 8 glasses of water a day! If you are unable to do this, it would behoove you to not give advice on an open board that might jeopardize the health and well being of the members. Hey, if you want to inject all night and day long without prepping the injection sites, all the more power to you and I am glad for you that it has worked out for you but it is still in violaton of sound medical best practice as "commonly" accepted today in the profession.
