Help me decide between these 2 breeds....

American Staffordshire Terrier or a Rottweiler.

I can't decide. The terriers are great dogs, but so are rotties.

rotties are too stupid

both are awesome choices. depends, cuz the staffordshire, you could live in an apartment and have one, as long as it got lots of exercise. rotts need lots of room.

rottweilers are not stupid. They are VERY smart dogs.

Terriers tend to be more temperamental/nippy.

100% rottie! They are smart, good with kids/families, fun, all around good dogs.

I'd get a (European) Rottweiler. Over the last century American breeders chose to mate only the most aggressive Rotties and now most examples of the breed in the U.S. are very aggressive. You can find reptuatable breeders in America that have kept the breed truly pure though and have maintained the breed's original personality traits. They are amazingly sweet and loyal.

Smart girl... Listen to her.

my dog is smarter than a lot of people that post here. he doesn't bark, he waits for me to eat before he does, he has toys and keeps them by his dog bed, and the kids from the neighborhood ride him like a pony. and when a silly bitch made the mistake of trying to hit me, her ass got taken to the ground. Rotts are good dogs. don't let the stupid ass losers owners who don't know how to train and properly treat an animal steer you away from what could possibly be your best buddy ever.

yeah bro rotties are dumb as hell i think boxers are the better breed !!!

boxers are for pussies who are too scared to own pitbulls

your home policy will go up with a staffie/pitbull too or you own't get insured what so ever

Agreed. I actually have had many rotties in my life and they have all been smart as hell (smartest dogs I've owned), loyal, gentle, sweet. They are not difficult to train or overly aggressive. Just go to a reputable breeder and make sure to see the bitch and the sire to the pups.

The biggest problem with rotties is hip dysplasia. Make sure there is no history of that in its bloodline. Some breeders will guarantee against hip displasia too.

Boxers are very sweet too. I like them, but I have never owned them.

Rotty hands down. My uncle used to breed them and they are the best dogs I have ever been around. I agree with everything HT and HR have said on the topic.

Cheers,
Scotsman

This I agree with. I have made "friends" with a german breeder in the USA but all dogs are from Germany and bloodlines, hips etc are certified german. If I get a rott, I'll go that route. K to you and to everyone!!!

I like boxers they are cool and all, but I'm set on one of these 2 breeds. I live in the country so no need for home owners policies and what not. I'm in the clear.

thanks to everyone for their replies. Very helpful. DO you guys ever have issues with their slobbering? I know before they eat they do, but just in general or in the summer?

How is their energy level? I don't want a dog that just lays around all day and I don't want another jack russell terrier.

bye a boxer u wpnt regret it!!!
fully agreed.
No sense in owning an ankle biter...
If I had to pick between the two that are listed I would go with a rottie. Terriors are too barky and they are ankle biters!

I had a Rott, dumb, smelly and would eat the food right out of your hand. She was a sweetheart though.

I have a 15 lb boston terrier now, and she's the bomb.

Did you deep fry them or bake them after you breaded them?

They didn't slobber too very bad -- certainly nothing like the St. Bernards did. =-)

Both of those breeds have issues to be reconed with, especially if you have kids, own a home, or want them to be social.
Labs are a good choice, smart, no substantial aggression issues with humans or other dogs, PERFECT for kids... if you buy a rot here in the US without serious research on the dogs geneaology/bloodline it's a crapshoot health and temperment wise.
check your homeowners policy ... see if they will insure you with a Rott.. where I'm from they will wont.
I've had two, one male one female. The male was a tyrant. he wanted to eat other dogs, I couldn't take him anywhere which sucked because he loved the beach, he would seek out and destroy anything that moved, psycho dog.
The female did better but was still a bit sketchy, I had to be on her at all times, she was very protective of me, very good at her job.
Akitas do the same shit, but better with kids I had one that lasted 16 years, she was a real sweetie...
Mastiffs do well with people, kids and other dogs... had a few of those too, (not the neopolitan) but the english did.

my former sister in law had an AST, that thing snapped alot, she liked to sit her fat body on you and burrow into your stomache... that was a solid dog, I was amazed at how heavy she was... she had problems with other dogs too.

The dogs I've had that were very easy all around were Labs and Australian Shepards. One St bernard that needs honorable mention, but he liked to lay on people, so that got to be a bit scary at 190 lbs

btw, i keep looking at the thread's title and thinking that you want us to help you decide between 2 broads...

but that's not possible, because we've never seen a thread like that here.
