Hello

gogocherryrose

New member
Is this forum section very active? I just wanted to introduce myself and find out.

I'm really interested in getting into shape in a healthy way. I know how to work hard I just don't have all of the knowledge that I need (diet-wise) and knowledge is key.

I exercise everyday, but my diet is getting worse and worse everyday it feels like I'm getting out of control.. Anyways I'm not going to go heavy into details right now unless someone is interested, I just wanted to say hello and see who is out there lol. Back to lurking.

Welcome to the women's forum. We stay pretty busy in here. A lot great info and advice. The more info you can provide the more detailed the advice. Good luck with your goals!

Welcome gogocherryrose! That sounds like a fantastic start! Good luck to you :)

On a work day:

1. Smoothy; almond milk, pineapple, frozen strawberries, vanilla yogurt, banana, and i add benefiber and omega fish oil supplement that tastes like lemon zest (or) i'm in a hurry and i grab a coffee and a banana

2. Cashews, peanuts or almonds for a snack.

3. Veg-drink (one of those green+ things that you just add water to) raw cucumber, tomato and brocolli salad. (I think I probably need more protein here)

4. I get pretty hungry right here. It's around the end of work. This is where trouble starts. On my way home from work I might grab some starbucks or a chocolate bar. This is where I feel I am really slipping lately... If I indulge here I may not eat anything for the rest of the night because of guilt or because all I want is more sweets.

5. A stir fry with lots of veg's with tofu. Or couscous salad with chickpeas and tofu. Sometimes tofu and yam and a spinach salad. Etc etc. I change up dinner a lot. And usually cook two separate dinners a night (one for me, one for my boyfriend)

6. Raw veg's make me feel pretty full... but I get a nasty sweet tooth again around the end of the night and I'll be grateful if I can get through it without eating some chocolate or frozen yogurt or something.

A non-work day:

still pretty busy on these days but I have more time for breakfast and lunch.

1. Scrambled eggs with some cheese + tomatoes and onion with almond milk or tea. (thinking of changing breakfast to oats, i just bought some steel-cut oats and bran but haven't even tried it yet) <-- do you think that would be best in the morning?

2. Snacks: raw veg's and nuts. or sesame snacks. or coffee.

3. Will usually make the same smoothy I have most mornings for lunch.

4. I make dinner earlier these days. It's always different but I try to keep it pretty balanced in terms of protein/veg/carbs.

I don't think I'm eating enough but the problem seems to be the sugars.. when I cave and grab something that I know isn't good for me I will sacrifice the good stuff, emotional eater I guess you could say. Hmm I don't know what I need to add. I know it's silly but I really don't know anymore.

If you managed to read through that mess lol thank you and my apologies.

Okay, for exercise... I have a treadmill in my bedroom that I use (just about) every day (right now I'm doing 45 mins) some light weights and squats right after running. I walk everywhere since I don't drive yet. I just bought the treadmill a couple weeks ago, before I moved I had a membership at a really awesome 24/7 gym but there is nothing like that in this new city. Hot yoga is usually part of my routine but there isn't a hot yoga place here -- I just moved a month in a half ago.

Right now I'm at 143lbs. I'm 5'6. 24 years old (in 11 days) and I have no idea what my bf% is yet.

I really want to get down to 125lbs. But I want to do it right, and I want to feel good about my diet. I'm still trying to get more veg's/protein and water in every day. I guess I need something more concrete though. Something more routine that I can rely on. And if it's a routine diet it has got to be pretty good you know what I mean?

Im not an expert in the diet field at all but from my own experience...your diet needs help!!! You need a lot more protein and whole grain carbs in the morning and lose the smoothie. And make sure you eat every 2.5-3 hours. You must make time to eat. You wont get the cravings when you leave work if you eat frequently.....I'm have a massive sweettooth so I can relate! Best thing I've found that curbs that craving is making pudding out of chocolate casein powder and eat before bed. You'd be amazed!

Hi! Welcome!

I'm no diet guru either, but looking at what you're eating, no wonder you're slipping around the end of work! You're probably starving by then!!! :) I agree with jen. Seems like you actually might need to increase your work day calories, particularly early in the day. You're probably burning right through those few things you're eating and then your body goes into starvation mode and eats itself (uses muscle for energy and hangs onto the fat).

You'll probably get better answers from some of the others here. Everything I learned about eating clean came from this board. There are tons of awesome women here!!! ;)

I agree, you need to eat more quality food earlier in the day. Avoid eating a lot later in the day. (night)

To quench the sweet tooth I keep dark chocolate hershey's kisses in the freezer. As long as I limit myself to one or two at night it solves the sweet cravings and isn't too bad on the calories. (About 25 calories per kiss). DON'T EAT THE WHOLE BAG--Advice from personal experience during a weak moment.

Yeah I'm with the girls here. A good start would be to find your maintenance calories there's a cal calculator on this article you could use http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/lebrun8.htm#.T1UqrBQZ_7Y.twitter

Then once you have you maintenance level start the day with oats and say egg whites then add complex carbs to your meals sweet pot is my personal Fave , eat every three hours and plenty water.
Do you use fit day ? If not that would be good to start then with weighing all your meals you should get you maintenance cals bang on target.
Good luck !

Welcome. I am right there with you with the sugar addiction. It drives me crazy. I am slowly working my way to cutting most of it out (other than my PWO shake).
I agree you need more protein.
5'6" 143 is a great place to start! Just adjusting you meal plan alone will make a huge difference. Add to that working out with a specific goal and you will be killing it.

Hi Jen! Thanks so much for the advice and for reading through my post. I would really really hate to lose the smoothy just because it tastes soo good but I agree with you that's it probably not doing much for me with the exception of getting some fruit into my diet... I'm unsure what to add for whole grain carbs but I'm going to get on this and do some research.

I'm definitely a pudding lover but I'm not sure what casein powder is. So I'll look it up and hopefully try it, thanks!

Hey! Thank you for the welcome and for reading through my post! I really do feel like I'm starving most of the time. I have such a sensitive stomach and a lot of things make me feel sick (I think I may be gluten sensitive and I have a hard time with lactose) so I have gotten into a habit of just avoiding foods that have had a bad impact on me in the past. I feel really limited. And I don't know that much about diets and food. So I think the first thing I will do like you suggested is eat more in the morning (what do you think about steel-cut oats and egg whites with some almond milk or yogurt, possibly some blueberries or something too? would that be balanced? maybe I need to increase it even more..hmm) Eek the thought of losing muscle is frightening. It's so much work and energy and time wasted to exercise if my diet can't maintain.

Youre quite welcome! This is what I was last told when I was craving chocolate..."anything that tastes that good isnt go for you, dont eat it" ;) Fruit has sugar. Sugar is bad. Whole grains...sweet potatoes, oatmeal(plain) and brown rice. theres a few more good ones but, Im preety sure the concensus is to choose from those three. Casein is a slow acting protein powder that i great to have before bed so you can still be ingesting protein while your body is recouping. One scoop of powder and the same amount of water, mix and leave in the fridge til the next night. Makes me happy!

LOL! I can't say I haven't done the same thing in the past... and those hershey's kisses are delicious.. possibly tooooo delicious. But 50 calories is nothing right? I'm going to try it. I think (hopefully) I have more control than I use to when it comes to that sort of thing. Thanks for the advice and for reading through my post! :)

Haha! I think I've heard that before but I was probably in the middle of eating something tasty and didn't give it much attention. I should post it up somewhere in my kitchen or something. Keep my mind out of the food gutters. Well that doesn't sound so bad.. I'm a huge fan of sweet potatoes, and oatmeal would be easy to incorporate in the mornings. Brown rice I'm not sure about. I know that white rice makes me sick to my stomach but I'll have to try brown again and see.

Wow! This casein stuff sounds really great! If it works for you I'm wquite happy to try it! You look really awesome in your profile pic by the way! That is totally the figure that I strive to have. :)

Hey! Thanks for the advice and reading through my post! Sometimes I end up going 4 hours without eating (just because of working) or I can manage to eat some nuts during that time. Do you think that would be causing a lot of damage? I'm going to pick up some more sweet potatoes, it's actually one of my favorite things to eat! And oatmeal and egg whites in the morning I can definitely do that. (I've never tried eggs without the yolk -- does it really make a big difference if I were to keep them?) Thank you for the link and I have yet to sign up on Fitday but I'm going to give it a try. :)

Your very welcome chic I'm glad to be a help;), yeah the best things is to eat more but less to start your metabolism , the eggs without the yolk just has no carbs as the yolk holds the carbs but tbh I normally have one yolk per four eggs or you could even keep two per four , this whole thing gets Really interesting once you start to look into it.
And yeah the casein is great stuff Too !!

I have it posted on my fridge and at my desk at work! I love food and sweets but my fitness goals are more important to me to let those things get in the way. I put post it notes on my roommates junk food last year that said things like "these will end up on your butt" "muffins make a muffin top" jello jinglers give you jiggley arms" those things helped me and made me laugh.

Dont worry about the rice if the other two work for you. Make Mrs.Dash seasoning your best friend too. No salt in it. I crave the casein pudding now more than regular! its great!

Thanks for the compliment!! Ill post up updated pics in a few weeks. Getting where you want to be will take alot of work and will power but it'll be worth it! and were all here for you if youre having a craving or a hard day post up and we'll set up straight! lol

With casein protein powder you can also make protein fluff! I actually just made my first batch last night, but it's awesome!!! 30gr casein PP, 1.25 oz skim milk, almond milk, or water, 125 gr frozen thawed berries, or ice if you can't have berries. Beat with mixer on high speed for 10 mins. It expands to 'fluff' and is delicious!

This is a pic from the site I got the recipe from. They say you can sprinkle with coco or sliced bananas. It's very filling (even made with just water and ice). Has to be casein PP though :)

You can! Just use 1 scoop of your casein PP, 1.25 of water, and some ice. Beat on high speed for 10 mins till it fluffs :).

You're welcome!

My breakfasts consists of oatmeal and eggs. I add strawberries and sugar free syrup to the oatmeal bc I absolutely cannot stand the taste of oatmeal. :) and I respectfully disagree with jen on the fruit thing. Some people say go for fruit, and others say no. You'll find as u research ur diet that there is conflicting info everywhere. It is maddening! :) but u eventually figure out what works for u. So strawberries work for me (and they're a good source of fiber), but they don't work for jen. No biggee.

I might save the yogurt with blueberries for a snack rather than with ur breakfast. And watch out for the added sugar in yogurt. Fruit has natural sugar which isn't as bad as the added sugar that's in about every product u can imagine. If u can stand the taste of plain yogurt (and I can't, just like oatmeal!!), eat it plain. Or I used to mix it with... U guessed it... A handful of berries (lol) and some chopped almonds. I'd also add vanilla extract and a packet of truvia. I have serious taste problems. Haha!

Hope that helps! :)

Anyone ever make protein pudding with plain Greek yogurt and any flavor you like of protein powder ? It's yummy . :) 1 cup of Greek yogurt mixed with one scoop protein powder .

I agree that you don't have to completely nix fruit. But some do contain a lot of natural sugar and should be limited. Of course your fitness goals would play a major factor as well

I haven't actually ever tried eggs without the yolks so I will give it a try and see how it is. Is it true that if you take the yolk out you are taking out all the cholesterol too? I'm not so worried about lowering cholesterol but it is interesting. I guess all of the protein is in the white of the egg?

I am totally going to do this too! I was thinking about it last night. I really think that having reminders in quotes and maybe some inspiring pics too will help. Hmm.... interesting, my boyfriend uses Mrs. Dash all the time. I didn't realize there was no salt in it. Haha thank you so much for the encouragement :) I really really really do appreciate it. So, and just out of curiosity, do you have any fitness women role-models that inspire you?

Hey! Thanks. :) So I tried having some oats for breakfast this morning and I was able to eat it just thinking about how healthy it is but meh it really isn't the tastiest stuff. This is good to know, I've been thinking a lot about the fruits and the sugar and how they may be effecting my sugar cravings. But I think I'm going to have to ween myself off of the fruit shakes and fruit deserts by adding some berries to breakfast instead and then maybe later when I'm 'stronger' lol.. make more changes. Keeping some strawberries and blueberries would be ideal though, I love them. Mmm...sugar free syrup that sounds like a good idea. :)

Yeah, I understand it now. I think the sugars from the fruits are most likely just contributing to my cravings and making them stronger. The whole shake of fruits (as delicious as it is) probably has to go. I'm resisting temptation to go and make one right now ahaha.

Try kicking the sugar 100 perecent cold turkey...And eating raw vegetables and lean protein for every meal. Do this for at least 2 weeks straight (No cheating) and you will get some serious results.

Hi anolan, Thanks for your advice! :) This really does sound the most ideal to me. I have to figure out meals and what does/doesn't have sugar in it so that I don't crash once I start. I've been thinking about adding a protein shake or the casein to my diet to get more protein in it because I'm on a mostly vegetarian diet with a lot of limitations already but it seems like they all have sugar in them. Is there a protein powder that doesn't have any sugar in it? OR am I completely wrong about this altogether (maybe they don't have anything in them to worry about?)

What is the best protein powder for this type of diet?

Ohh, thanks jen!
Do you use their brand for the casein as well? I may order some online.

Just wanted to say that I haven't eaten anything sweet (or salty) since joining here and I think I might just be onto something, feeling good! Also been eating oatmeal (irish oats) every morning and have only indulged in one fruit smoothy. Still hunting around for recipes to add to the diet though.

Haha yeah I think so. Thanks guys :)
I am really glad I decided to join, I really just needed that motivation and the extra help makes all the difference.

I use ON (optimum nutrition) casein.

Nice work on the no sugar/salt!!! So hard to do at first. Once you do it for awhile it gets easier

Thank yah!!! I will check it out. Still haven't purchased any protein powders yet (been eating chicken breast and eggs)

So far some of the changed I've made to the diet (and the places where I think I want to add a protein powder) Any suggestions or advice appreciated!! :)

Workout = Morning Run

Breakfast = Steel-Cut Oatmeal (1/4 cup) + So Good Original Omega Dha (1/4 cup) + Barleans Omega Swirl

Snack = So Good Original Omega Dha + Protein Powder (Is this a good place to add it?) + B50-Complex + Biotin + Vitamin C

Lunch = Eggs + Healthy Wrap + Baby Tomatos (Raw)

Snack = Baby Carrots (Raw) + Brocolli (Raw) + Olympic Probiotic Organic Yogurt French Vanilla (1 cup)

Dinner (Before 6pm) = Oven Baked Chicken Breast (Boneless/Skinless + Mrs. Dash Seasoning) + Sweet Potatos (Baked with Extra Virgin Olive Oil + Mrs. Dash Seasoning) + Vegies (Raw)

Workout = 7pm (Weights + Light Cardio + Stretching)

Post Workout =
Protein Powder (Eating peanuts or eggs right now)

What's that omega dha and swirl stuff u have for breakfast and snack?

First glance IMO which isn't an expert opinion at all....move the eggs from lunch to breakfast. Add chicken or fish to every meal that doesn't have it in it. And add a protein shake post morning run. I'm sure some other ppl here can you ur first attempt at a diet a closer look and tweak it more

I eat Fruit several times a day ,theres a difference in corn Frucose Which is equavalent to table sugar than Fruit sources.
Regular consumption of fruits and vegetables lowers the risk of cardiovascular diseases, certain types of cancer, and other chronic diseases. These beneficial effects of fruits and vegetables have been partly attributed to their high content of flavonoids, the intake of which is also inversely associated with the incidence of many chronic diseases.

Flavonoids are compounds that protect plants from pathogens, ultraviolet light, and other stress and are responsible for the deep colors of flowers and fruits. Many flavonoids are polyphenols, and their antioxidant properties are probably related to their polyphenolic chemical structure.

The mechanisms by which flavonoids may lower chronic disease risk, however, remain to be fully elucidated. Most flavonoids have antioxidant properties, and extracts and juices of fruits and vegetables exhibit substantial antioxidant capacity in the test tube. Therefore, it is conceivable that the health benefits of flavonoid-rich foods are related to the antioxidant protection of biological macromolecules, such as lipids, proteins, and DNA. However, this remains controversial. Although some studies have failed to show a short- or long-term antioxidant effect of fruits, vegetables, or flavonoid consumption in humans, other studies have reported positive results, especially an acute increase in the antioxidant capacity of plasma. However, flavonoids cannot explain the observed increases in plasma antioxidant capacity because their concentration in plasma is quite low. Moreover, the metabolism of flavonoids may greatly affect their antioxidant capacity. After consumption, flavonoids are poorly absorbed in humans. After absorption, flavonoids are metabolized into glucuronides, which undergo further chemical modifications, such as methylation or sulfation. Consequently, the concentration of flavonoid metabolites in plasma is very low, yet the reported increase in antioxidant capacity of plasma after flavonoid-rich foods are consumed often greatly exceeds the increase in plasma flavonoids. This paradox intrigued us.

Apples are one of the main sources of flavonoids in the Western diets, providing approximately 22% of the total phenols consumed per capita in the United States. Other dietary sources of flavonoids are tea, wine, onions, fruit, and chocolate. An increased intake of apples has been correlated with a decreased risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and incidence of thrombotic stroke. Because we suspected that flavonoids may be responsible for the health benefits of apples, exerting their effects by antioxidant mechanisms,, such as lipids or proteins.

First glance IMO which isn't an expert opinion at all....move the eggs from lunch to breakfast. Add chicken or fish to every meal that doesn't have it in it. And add a protein shake post morning run. I'm sure some other ppl here can you ur first attempt at a diet a closer look and tweak it more
The omega DHA is the type of soy milk that I drink, I just added that because there are so many varieties of it now and they all have different stats for calories and protein. The swirl stuff is a fish oil supplement.. but I need a better one soon, just finishing up this bottle for now. It's yummy though, tastes like lemons. I started taking it when I was having troubles with my skin. Also, I hear you about the eggs. I just don't know where to put the oatmeal... because it feels good in the morning but I can't manage to eat anymore than the oatmeal because it's so filling. Also I like to run right when I wake up, on an empty stomach, not sure if this is the best but I should try to eat some eggs or add a protein shake right after that maybe... Yeah this definitely is harder than I thought it would be to figure it out perfectly and balanced.

Hi Radar! Thanks for the welcome! :)

So do you think it would best if I were to add fruit back to my diet? I kinda miss em. Although I do eat onions most dinners and tea throughout the day. Is that enough? I can't honestly say that I can follow your post 100% because I haven't read a lot about this kind of stuff yet. I don't want to cheat myself out of good health just to reach a goal weight. At the same time I am pretty excited to see results!

Ok wasn't sure what it was. If you're trying to gain muscle Sometimes u just have to force feed yourself. Protein shake post run with water. Oatmeal, egg whites and fruit(apple, grapefruit) for breakfast. I agree with radar about adding some fruit(he's extremely knowledgeable BTW!) Ive just learned some of this from trial and error. Everyone's body reacts differently.

Fruits such as apples and Bananas Have a slower GI index, not all fruits or carbs are created equal.

What is the Glycemic Index?
not all are created equal – even with equal amounts of carbohydrate, some foods will cause a higher blood sugar rise than others. The higher the glycemic index (GI), the higher the glucose response in the blood. Many low carb diets take glycemic index and/or glycemic load into account when making diet recommendations, aiming to avoid a large blood sugar rise. For example a ripe banana will have a higher GI reading than a fresh one just picked, due to the fact as a fruit ripens it's sugar levels increase.

So Have an apple or two daily it won't hurt you and its healthy and a good way to avoid those sugar cravings.

Radar I love your posts they are always a wealth of great info ! Thanks for sharing.
looking awesome on here babes well done.
I get you with the fruit as I am the same I like a pear or apple daily ,
I also agree that sometimes you have to force feed yourself for instance I now have fish in my diet I hate fish I can't physical chew it without making me feel Ill so I blend it and wash it down with water. All in the name of a killa body ah!! Lmfao ;)

Keep on ,keeping on.......:)!

You guys are seriously awesome! :)

This is all really interesting. I hadn't heard of the GI index before. I can't even remember the last time I ate an apple. I'll eat bananas, every berry I can find, papayas, mangoes, grapes, pears, melons, oranges, grapefruit, pineapples, pretty much everything but apples. Hmm.. but I can see the benefits of them so I will add them to my list.

Going to GNC to hopefully get protein powder today!! Yay Excited!

DMK (what does that stand for by the way?) you have some serious will power!! I hate the texture and smell and taste of fish too so I understand this completely! That's awesome. You inspire me :)

Vitamin shoppe is a lot better if you have one of those.

Jen - Just searched for one but I can't even find a regular vitamin shop. The closest one is 3 hours away! :(
I was thinking of shopping online because of this but I was gunna check out GNC before putting money into paypal because it takes awhile.
Maybe I'll pick one up from GNC and order the next one from the internet...

WOAH! Slow down Girl, Whats wrong with NTBMS Protein you can have it in 2-3 days and its not full of fillers like GNC Products are, plus they're over Priced.

Or Get some Muscle Milk from Orbit ,the vanilla tastes like a Dairy Queen milkshake.
If you do ,hit me up and i'll give you a discount code!

Lol! :(

Okay I know GNC sucks.. I've heard it before, and the people there always try to sell me junk without explaining why I should need it. I'm browsing the online store for NTBM - what protein powder are you recommending? I've been looking at Dymatize. Can't seem to find a website for Orbits. Sorry I'm a noob to all this protein powder stuff. Tried some stuff a long time ago but my boyfriend had bought it for me.

Rocky Road Whey to Build Muscle protein, Cupcake Batter is.good too...too many flavors to list, and much better than Dymatize IMO.

Sure any Whey to build muscle protein will work, better than that GNC Crap!

Peanut Butter Crunch, Cinnabun, Rockyroad, and Apple Crisp. In that order of greatness.

Alright, peanut butter crunch next time, got to love PB! Maybe 1 scoop PBC and 1 scoop Rocky Road, make homemade protein bars with the same mixture...getting myself hungry now! Thanks a lot!

to be honest I'm not doing as good as I wish I was... But I've managed to stick with the new diet (minus the days I was a zombie and not eating) lol...
Wondering what to do at the gym, a little lost now that I'm alone.

Baby steps Hun....you can do this. It happens to all of us. Seems like there's no light at the end of the tunnel but there is! You're a strong chick! You can make it through! Sticking with the diet is a step in the right direction. Where are you lost at the gym? No routine? Not able to focus? New environment confussing you?....last time I was post breakup funk I played Carrie Underwood's 'cowboy cassanova' and 'UN do it' over and over again and ran on the beach. Never ran so long in my life. Lol

I took the recipe and made the same with apple protein from NTBM. It was great but guess what. . .

Here is the best bar recipe Bro:

6 scoops bannana protein
1/3c water (might need to add a tiny bit more as you go)
3/4c agave
1c peanut butter
1c oatmeal
1/4c each: dried bannana slices, sliced almonds, dried cherries- all chopped

Throw it all in a mixer and press it into a non-stick sprayed dish. 30 mins in the freezer and good to go.

These are the best yet.

PM me if you try it.

aw thanks! :)
yeah it has been quite bad lately.. but things are getting better and i believe things will be okay soon enough..
the diet is going pretty good! it's been so easy since my appetite is gone haha! but i'm sure that will change and i will probably run into troubles with cravings again in the future... but i will be prepared for it this time.

the gym... it's just such an awkward gym really.. and i really feel like i don't belong there... i don't know anyone there (and i know that's fine and everything) but it's literally all guys and i feel like i am being looked down upon in a way.. it doesn't help that i don't know how to use all the equipment properly yet or else i would just say fuck em. but it's awkward. i wish i had a girlfriend who wanted to go with me. but i haven't even told anyone i'm home yet.... plus everyone i know/knew here is just not into that kinda stuff. so i really do hope to meet some people... but god where do you meet people nowadays? it's hard... blahh.
routine wise i honestly don't have anything. and right now it's hard to say what my time table is going to look like, i start a new job tomorrow and should find out soon what my schedule will be looking like... so that will help.
i've just been running on the tread every morning and every night and eating strict... i've lost a couple more pounds.

i will check out your songs... i find music has really been helping me get by..

Great job sticking with the diet!! If you need help with what to do, let us know your time constraints and frequency, I'm sure we can help you figure out a program!

ooh hey! :)
thanks so much for that
i really appreciate it and i hope that soon i will know what my schedule is going to be like because i really do want to form a proper routine. and i'm going to go through with it no matter how hard it is!!

first day of work. it was interesting! lol..

very different than what i'm use too... thinking of getting a reception job again lol.. but i'm going to give it a couple weeks if i can to see how it goes

New jobs/ schedules always screw up your routine but you're doing great babe! Hang in there!
