heavy bag tips?

anyone have any heavy bag tips for a beginner? i have been doing muay thai for a month and want to get my punches down. my form seems to be off

Hit with a rythm, do not try and kill it with every punch like I see most beginners do. Use speed not power so youre not pushing your punches. Routines I would vary, one round jabs while moving, one round 1-2's then moved, then a couple of freestyle rounds. Watch other good fighters from your gym and emulate what they do for a while, watch any title boxing vidoe on heavy bags if youre just starting out. Good luck!

Wrap, wrap, WRAP, WRAP your hands if you are going to pound away at a heavy bag.

Form, technique, speed, power all come in time. What can come very quickly it two damaged wrists---then zero training means zero progress.

And for any traditionalists that say "oh, phhh, no wrist wraps are needed, you just need to strengthen your wrists" well, they can go pound fucken' sand. Boxers probably have the best hand technique and wrist strength out of any martial artist, and they wrap for a reason.

I know this from experience, and I learned the hard way. As a traditional martial artist, weightlifter, and rock climber, I thought I'd be immune to damaged wrists. After nearly a year, my wrists finally no longer ache from heavy bag training.

How To Hand Wrap

i agree with both posts.........and add that a 'water bag' would even serve you better for hand injuries. I got one for home-training, and it is excellent. Also a typical bag routine for me is like this:

1 round jabs
1 round 1-2 punch combo
1 round 1-2-3 combo
1 round inside work
1 round stick-and-move

Then on the kicking bag:
1-round right low kicks
1-round left low kicks
1-round kick combo's (push and low kick, cut and low kick, etc)
2-3 rounds HANDS and FEET combos

Hope that helps...

why do my bi's hurt when i do heavy bag?

probably becuase you are hitting with pure arm force, and not your entire body (ie. hips and shoulders)..

think of throwing a punch like a gun - the bullet (your fist) whould be the last thing that is thrown

Exactly. Youre arm punching bro, practice with first lifting the foot while putting out the cigarette on the floor, twisting the hip and leg, bringing the shoulder through. and then whippin the arm over. A good mechanical punch wont leave ya as sore. practice all punching without any equipment first to learn the mechanics. Good luck!

Practice punches with speed and direct force, not with power .That may be leaving you with bad limbs too.

just DO it . Most of the things that newbs do (like Arm Punching) wears you out , and in time your body seeks its own level; , even keel of Energy Dispersal .
