Has anyone known or herd of these cases before?

One of my friends just had a baby. There was a complication where one of his lungs had a hole in it. It looks as though the little guy is going to be o,k, now, and the doctors said it really wasn't all that uncommon.
When talking to a friend about it later they said the cause was "the mother smoking". Even though she wasn't during her pregnancy, the fact that she used to could have still have effected the baby.
Has anyone ever herd of these situations before?

If she did not Smoke while she was pregnant than NO it did not cause the problem because the baby was not subjected to the toxins and the toxins are what cause the affliction (In that instance). If she was doing nothing she was not supposed to then it happened by no fault of her own.

Thanks you guys, and the "little fighter" is breathing almost 80% on his own now. They say he should be ready to go home in a couple of days.
