i was in the sun about a week ago and the next day all these white spots appeared on my back. its supposedly tinea versicolor , a skin yeast that flares up from prolongue unprotected exposure to sunlight. i bought selsun blue for it and i started using it today. how long will it take for this to go away + how do i apply the selsun?

if its anything like tinea corpus (ringworm-which you probably know about being a fighter)

put on a loufa (sp) or washrag, and scrub your back with the selsun blue, like its soap. not "i just got raped" hard like breaking the skin, but like your tryin to get clean after going camping or something.

make sure you clean your clothes daily with bleach, and at the end of the week if not more frequently change ur sheets and clean with bleach.

by the end of the week youl be good, keep doing it for a 2nd week and you can stop.

----thats if its anything like ring worm (tinea corpus)

ya ive heard that it takes about 2 weeks to go away. i think the diff between ringworm and versicolor i think is that ringworm is from sweat and unhygenic mats (wrestling/mma/bjj w.e) and versicolor is from the sun. thanks for the input though, atleast i know im on hte right path by purchasing selsun. i will try your method tonight, im just glad this shit isnt permanant. thanks again.

take nizoral pills 1pill 2x a day for 4days, use selsun blue shampoo on hair and back. take selenium 200mgc a day , get the selenmethionine form of it. not from yeast form. take milk thistle 3x a day for a month, the nizoral is toxic on the liver

Tinea versicolor is a fungal infection that does NOT occur from sun exposure. Like other fungal infections, it occurs because there is a warm environment available. In this case, it grows from sweating. People who are nervous all the time and sweat a lot are more at risk. The fungus normally lives on our skin, but becomes pathologic when the right conditions are present. Sun exposure only accentuates the visibility of the rash. If not treated, it can cause permanent discoloration.

Selenium shampoo usually cures it, but there are oral medicines (like ketoconazole [Nizoral] as celica suggested) available too. With oral medicines, you must exercise strenuously (enough to sweat) about 30-60 minutes after taking the medicine. You can't shower for 2-3 hours after sweating with the medicine. It improves treatment success.

If you use the selenium shampoo, make sure you apply it at night and do not wash it off until the morning.

swatdoc is dead on. this is common and easily treatable. it does have a high recurrence rate though.

The shampoos never worked for me. I had a horrible case of it. The worse this particular dermatologist had seen. I was given Nizoral tablets and shampoo. It did the trick.
