Hand position for DB side lateral raises

Lumberg

New member
I've had elnow surgery and doing DB lateral raises with my palms down hurts my elbow. I have noticed that facing my palms forward seems to create more stability in the joint. I think it also stresses the muscles of the forearms in mush the same way as hammer curls.

What I want to know is how does this affect the concentration on the delts? It feels like it may be concentrating the force more on the front delts but woudl like to hear from the experts

I am no expert but I have seen an article talking about hand position and db delt training. Unfortunately I lost the link. But it did say that thumbs up (which also happens to be palms forward in your case) stresses the front delts more. Thumbs side hits mid delts more.

It was also talking about how you should hold the dbs thumbs up when doing front raises, rather than thumbs to the side, which many people do.

Yep...you're gonna hit the fronts more. But hey, it's better than getting injured, so stick with it.

And backlash...right on with the thumbs up when doing front raises. I see too many people doing them with palms down.

Doing front raises with your thumbs up was one of the things my therapist stressed after my shoulder surgery. Another thing was to be sure not to go above my shoulder with the db's on side or front raises. He said that it places too much stress on the shoulder.

Yep again...puts the humeral head in a good position to be dislocated anteriorly and inferiorly, where there is no real support.

try scaption raises. thumbs up side raises to a slight angle in the front. go ahead and feel tension in the deltoids (with your fingers) as you do them and find the angle that gives the greatest tension.

aah right, like face down on an incline bench.

Ive always heard to do them like you are pouring a glass of water.

Yup, you're right. When doing db side lats, you should come up parallel to the shoulders and make sure that you're pinky knuckle is higher than your other knuckles <-- Like pouring a glass of water from a pitcher.

Very good analogy. :)
