I'm no Boxing expert or anything, but I do know a little bit, and I don't put Tyson up there with the best quite frankly. He was a bully in the ring, up until the point when good Boxers started to figure out his style. Then he was nothing. Any good boxer, who wasn't totally intimidated by the guy, could, would, and did, beat his ass.

Maybe up until 1989 he was on his way, but he chose another route.

Hence the qualifier 'pre-Robin Givens' when decribing Mike's greatness.

Tyson lacked the competition of the Ali-Foreman-Frazier-Norton era, so it is hard to gauge him against that type of fighter. He had to make due with Carl Williams and Michael Spinks.

Tyson was also a rproudct of the $20M fight era, so there were no shortage of people around wuith their hands out. It;s too bad, in a way, because he could have settled this best ever dispute if he had maintained any focus.

I;d have to say Ali was the best ever, Unmatched combo of speed and strength.

Ali was the best. He had it all.

Tyson used to win by hitting guys in the heart. Holyfield wouldn't have gone 6 rounds against Ali.

Marciano is an interesting argument but he lacked the speed of Ali.

And Ali could take a punch, remember fighting Joe Frazier with a broken jaw for 10 rounds?

I would say Ali. If you watch some of those fights, he was so accurate with his punches...he hit Frazier on the button every time he threw. I also believe without a doubt that he was the SMARTEST of all the heavyweight champs. He knew how to get in their head (made Sonny Liston quit), knew how to manupulate them in the ring, knew how to craft a strategy (rope a dope), etc....the guy was smart. He also knew how to play the media.

I remember seeing George Foreman fight Joe Frazier and almost knock his head off...I think he knocked him down six times in two rounds....now rememeber Ali never knocked him out...and I thought NO ONE could beat him. like 6'4", pure muscle, hit like a freight train...then I saw Ali make him look like a fool...UNBELIEVEABLE, easily done. How much moxy does it take to plan to allow him to beat on you for 10 rounds until he tires himself out? Angelo Dundee was not even privy to that strategy, and was screaming at ALi to fight....

Anyway, for all the reasons above, I think Ali was the best, plus he lost 3 years in his ABSOLUTE prime due to the draft thing.

I think in his prime, he could have beaten anyone else in their prime. The guy was an artist..

And for you guys who will say Tyson, Tyson, Tyson, remember fuckin Buster Douglas knocking him out...he couldn't take a punch. He beat most people by pounding them into submission, and he didn't get hit. Now, that is something, he was quick, and awesome, fast, powerful, etc...but I believe Ali would have beaten him, cause he was so smart...

NOW give me some karma......

I think Tyson was great until affro-head got a hold of him.

He went downhill after that fast.

What are you talking about. He's 49-4 with 2 no contests. Look at the 4 losses: 2 fights he wasnt prepared for (B. Douglas, Lewis), a 12-round thriller (Tyson/Holyfield 1), and a DQ (T/H 2). The no contest against Golota should have been a Tyson win. Golota just gave up and left the ring with his trainers chasing him. That would give Tyson 50 wins. 50 wins is more than most of history's heavyweights. Give him back his prison time & the 1 year he was banned after the Holyfield fight and he'd have 65+ wins. Mike is 37-0 in non-title fights.

Muhammad Ali vs. Mike Tyson, both at their very prime = Ali getting decimated by Tyson, probably within 6 rounds

If/When Tyson/Lewis 2 happens, if Tyson is in proper shape, focused, and not heavily drugged again, he will win.

BEEFYBULL

GOLOTA DIDNT JUST GIVE UP. THAT IS THE MISCONCEIVED ASSUMPTION THAT EVERYONE THINKS HAPPENED. HE HAD A BROKEN EYE SOCKET AND I BELIEVE SOMETHING WRONG WITH HIS JAW AS WELL. THE DOCTORS SAY IF HE WOULD HAVE CONTINUED, HE COULD HAVE WENT BLIND IF HIT A CERTAIN WAY.

HOWEVER, I AGREE WITH YOU ABOUT TYSON. IF CUZ DEMOTO WOULD HAVE STAYED ALIVE LONGER TO KEEP TYSON IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION, HE WOULD HAVE BEEN THE GREATEST. I ALSO AGREE THAT IF HE GETS FOCUSED AND IN SHAPE FOR LEWIS, HE WILL BEAT HIM. IF NOT BEAT HIM, THE FIGHT WILL BE A CLOSE DECISION. HE NEEDS TO LAY OFF OF THE MEDICINE THAT MAKES HIM SO COMPLACENT. HE WASNT AGGRESSIVE AT ALL.
