Greatest Heavyweight Boxer Ever...

joack said:

I agree. The "old" Mike Tyson would knock out any heavyweight boxer who ever stepped foot in the ring, including my sentimental favorite Ali.

Yes, Tyson would beat the hell out of Rock M., Joe Luis & Ali!

Word.

It depends on your definition of "greatest fighter". Does that imply which boxer accomplished the most? Or who would win a fight against any other fighter when both are in their prime? Noone can ever say with certaintly who the greatest was. Styles make fights. Ali had trouble with Frazier and Norton, yet Foreman disposed of both of them easily. And yet Foreman lost to Ali. Just an example of how styles makes fights. I like Evander Holyfield, the warrior. I can't think of another fighter as tough and who accomplished as much with what he had.

I agree with this completely. It's why I picked Holyfield as #1. He fought many great fighters... and he fought them individually. He often adjusted his fighting style and training to take on a man... and he didn't rope a dope... He fought them. He faced them with courage like a champion.

It's odd, but with all the people who lionize Mike Tyson... they miss the point that he never won a single fight against a great contender. The few times he fought qualified boxers - he lost. He will be a very forgotten fighter after the memory of this generation fades and the media hype of the Tyson legend is long gone. You can say he could have been a great and would have been a great... but given the fact that he never won a single fight against a great boxer I'm at loss for what the myth is based on?

Would Buster Douglas have been able to last a round against George Forman? Ali? Marciano? I don't think so.

sofageorge is spot on. I'm not sure if i put holyfield at the top, but he's at least top 5, and a lot higher than tyson in my book.

Exactly, I neglected to mention Holyfield but he deserved props too. He ducked no one. Tyson I still think had potential to maybe be the greastest of all time but we'll never know. For all the people yelling Tyson can they name one world class fighter he beat? He basically destroyed tomato cans. He did it in a more devesting mannor than anyone but tomato cans nonetheless. Like someone else said Tyson did benifet for being really good at time when the heavyweight division was really sad.

I put Holyfield at #1 not because I think he could whoop ass on Ali, Marciano, Lewis, Foreman, and the other greats. I put him as #1 because of the history and class of his career. He ducked no one. He fought smart. He fought with skill and courage.

And he was never a natural big boy. All the other guys on this list were natural heavyweights. Holyfield was the only cruiser in history ever to step up to the plate and beat any all callers to step into the heavyweight crown. That is one of the most remarkable accomplishments in boxing history... and if you are looking for the heart of a champion then that is what boxing is all about.
