Got my first iphone today...

...took it out of the box and looked through the paperwork/brochures that came with it...question? Every phone I've ever had before said to plug it in and fully charge it before you started using it...this thing doesn't indicate that it needs to be charged at all. I plugged it in anyway but I'm curious as to proper protocol...anyone??
