you totally did the right thing.
any dog who will run up and attack people (play or not) must be kept on a chain or leash. It is not funny in the least...
my sis was attacked by a rottweiler while running once...and this one was too big for her to fight off. They ended up killing the dog because it had bit 2 other people. She was ok but needed stiches.
