Going Skiing.....

and I need advice. This will be my first time skiing. It's sad, I've lived a half an hour away from slopes, but I never skied. Any advice for a first time skier besides the obvious "Don't fall and bust your ass"? :)
 
usually they'll give you a quick lesson on the basics of skiing... stick with the bunny hill until you are comfortable enough to move on.. :)
 
fuck yeah. although I would like to see some snow, for once in my life. living in sunny california all my life, I have not seen one hint of snow, even though snowboarding and other snow sports is pretty big down here...:rolleyes:

And actually, I was advised to avoid the bunny slope because it is so crowded. I've been told to try the next slope up. Is this a good idea? :confused:
 
Ok. Here goes.

1. Make sure your boots are just a little tight but comfortable.
2. Make sure your bindings are setup for a beginner
3. make sure you rent shaped beginner skis with lots of "forgiveness", for beginners.

4. Keep in mind the basic maneuver of "snow plowing" and the "schuss"

5. and finally check out www.ifyouski.com, study it, understand it and memorize it.

It's an excellent sport, you will love it more and more as you get better. Be prepared for frightning acceleration. And one last thing, you will be sore in places you did not know you could get sore.

Thanks! I'll definitely check the web site out. I want to hopefully be prepared for this.
 
the new parabolic skis make skiing very easy for first timers these days.

I have a friend who's a pro snow-boarder. He just tells people not to do anything stupid, and not to be afraid of falling down.

If you need help warming up after a cold day on the slopes, lemmie know. ;)

Well that is actually a funny myth as far as i am concerned, it does make it easier, but only on very packed snow. One there is a couple of inches of powder i see ALL the rookies go down like twings, LOL!! And i am only allowed to laugh at them because i have payed my dues in falling, LOL.

Once i fell on a double black diamond, must have been going around 50mph at least. Man that hurt, the soft powder fealt like stone pebbles hitting my face, then there was the time on the terrain park when i flew in the air and landed off the train in the grass...........painfull memories.


But i wore my bruises like medals. :D

chick will be skiing on the east coast of north america, no powder here bro.
 
We got snow..Ive never skied either..Ive had some nasty sledding and tubing accidents.....fun stuff

This is definitely going to be an experience. I'm not looking forward to the ski lift though. I'm not a big fan of heights.

I will let you in on a little secret. I have skied in PA before. I believe that all NJ, NY and PA slopes have nice snow guns. Ofcourse nothing beats Europe, Ofcourse, but i enjoyed the PA's Blue Mountain slopes.:D

I will be in North Carolina I believe. Let's hope it's got a nice snow gun too.
 
ive been skiing before. we dont have snow where i live so we had to make do with plastic mats (dry slope). i didnt do many lessons so im not exactly an expert, they only trained me up to the point where i could ski down the hill really fast, so my advice aint detailed. i just wanted to say hi really :wavey:

snow plow :) dont lean back too much, beware of damaging your knees as it will f- up your training and go slowly at first :). and if some ski instructor tries puttin his hands on you poke him in the eyes and then push him down the slope...its a skiing tradition, trust me on this, it tests his skiing ability while temporarily blinded :D

as your not a man i dont have to explain the potential horrors of the ski-lift :xeye:

N.C. Skiing... Checkout www.skibeech.com

They have a Live Webcam and you can see the Man made snow conditions on Beech Mtn. N.C.
This is the highest altitude Ski resort in the east and is pretty good covered with Snow making equip and even Lights for night skiing...It may be a bit late in the seacon to ski in N.C. this year...

It's fun as hell! I'm going for spring break. You're going to love it!! Oh, and the ski lifts aren't that scary. Just don't swing on them and you won't fall off!

hey you got to ski in actual snow :). most of our group were deathly scared of faling over incase one of their hands/fingers got trapped in a hole in the plastic and get it ripped off. or being castrated by the ski lift machine. i bet its probably quite cheap to go skiing too over there

brutal!

real snow is better... although once i skied in a tshirt and took a tumble. i discovered that snow can be quite scratchy.

once i "fell" but ended up on my feet and continued down the hill.... i think i did a front flip!

hmm...moutainside full of snow, so probably quite cold

canuck choice of clothing- t-shirt ;)

lucky u puklled off dat flip....or else you would have been screwed. bet everyone thought u were dead flash huh?

PHAT.... The other resorts in the NC area are OK but beech has a good instructor program Rentals and also a great Tubing run.
As you can see by the beech Webcam, the artificial snow coverage is good for this time of year..
The other resorts(Hawksnest..tubing only, Sugar http://www.appnetsite.com/webcameras_Sugar2.htm
are much smaller and have less diversity for the non beginner.

We stayed at the Pinnacle Inn at beech and it was real nice.
Condo's with a bus going back and forth to ski beech...
