My GF hasn't worked out in 2 years and she just started working out yesterday. She has surgery next Friday and will be out from the gym for 3 weeks. Would it be a waste of time for her to start going to the gym for the next week and a half or should she just start after recovering from surgery. She said it would be a waste of time for her to start now. What do you think? Start now or wait till after surgery?

It never hurts to get some time in the gym.. .maybe even just to relax a little and lose some stress before the surgery. Some stretching and light weights might actually be good to help her recover - you didnt' say what the surgery is - maybe working on some flexibility, etc. before wouldn't be bad. But by the same token, dont' work so hard that she goes into surgery already stiff from lifting.....

I agree it could help with stress & might be beneficial as far as getting the habit going (so it'll be easier to pick up where she left of post-recovery).

BUT.... I think you begin to lose lean mass after 1-2 weeks of inactivity... plus 'trained muscle' will atrophy more slowly relative to untrained muscle. Sooo, my point is that I think any gains she makes as far as strength in a week (which would be minimal, if any) WOULD be lost in 3 weeks of inactivity. So she's right IMO that it's a 'waste of time' as far as that is concerned.

Good luck to her!

LOL - -"Boob job" -- ooooookay,... then my suggestion is don't spend time in the gym -- spend it doing whatever she has to do that requires upper body / torso movement before going in because she may be limited for a couple of weeks. (Depends on "unders" or "overs".) Since she does have some help around the house (you, I hope!) it won't be so bad. But consider things like moving some dishes down from the cupboards and other items normally stored up high so that she doesn't have to reach up (she won't be able to).

Good luck - lots of info about boob jobs, recovery, exercise post op etc. if you do a search.

The gym is a great outlet for stress...for her just over all sense of well being..why hasn't she worked out in 2 yrs? No time in the gym is a waste of time in my opinion.
