Geek out time....new computer build

Dial_tone

Been using the box in my sig since 2001'ish. All the parts for my new build should be here by Thursday.

Case - Antec P182
Power supply - SeaSonic S12 430W
Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3L
Processor - Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550
RAM - G.SKILL 4GB DDR2 800
Graphics - SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 4850 512MB
Hard drive - SAMSUNG Spinpoint F1 1TB 7200 RPM SATA

Onboard sound and I'll still with old speakers for now. I don't game much so I chose a quad since I encode a lot of video. Can't wait!

I pieced it together over a 2 month period so I didn't have to charge anything. I haven't added it all up...maybe $1,100 with shipping. Switching to a quad core at the last second almost doubled the processor cost to $350. I chose parts for low noise over performance since my computer is pretty close to the bed. My current PC is too loud to leave on at night.

Why only 512 MB for the graphics card?

Also, what size LCD screen did you get? widescreen?

If you don't play 3D games even 128MB is enough. I've had a 22" LCD for a while. It's fine.

AAP, the roommate is getting my hand me downs unless Niko steals it.

first off, aren't those qx9550's still like $500 or a little more? You gotta tell me where you're gettin em for $300.

Second, I would wait for maybe two months before you buy.......couple reasons.

1) Intel is coming out with a new chipset, so all the quad core's will drop dramatically in the next few months.

2) christmas is around the corner so deals will happen a month or so out.

3) this holiday season may suck ass so I'm kind of expecting the preholiday deals to be absolute blow outs. "IF" the tech industry doesn't cave to the speculation, they'll have no choice "after" christmas when they're stocks are unsold. I really think high end computer components are going to get hit hard this holiday season and it may extend well into next year. There's already been hints that the hardware companies are all going to slow down a bit to compensate for this economy. So you have software people saying that the next big step in software will happen in 2-3 years. The new intel chips may remain high, but I think all the quad cores are going to fall through the floor in january at the latest.

just my opinion, I could be wrong. BUt the economy is pointing in this direction for all industries.

yeh, that's why I'm asking. I'm a gaming fan.
oh, I would think 512MB would be enough for all but the highest resolutions. I just didn't want to pay for what I wouldn't use.

The Q9550 was $320 and it included some game called Far Cry 2, which I won't even play since I use Linux.

Nice. I'm in the middle of a computer build as well. I also purchased the Q9550. Paid $286 from Newegg.com a month or so back.

I almost pulled the trigger on buying the other components I still need a few weeks ago, but I'm hoping to catch some deals between now and Christmas.

Nice build man.

I'm gonna be upgrading soon here.
My current build:
Asus P5B deluxe wifi (P965 chipset - dated)
Intel E6400 (dated)
4x2gb G. Skill DDR2-1000 memory
7900GTO
640gb Seagate 7200.11 HD This thing FLYS!
2x74gb Raptor HD's (non-functional at the moment)

Why'd you go with the Samsung Spinpoint? It has 5 platters, newer hd's like the seagate 7200.11 have 2 platters - which generally correlates to better operating life. Though its not a bad drive at all.

Awesome video card. 512mb of video memory is fine with a GPU like the 4850.

The new intel core i7's are going to be like a grand when they first come out. They require DDR3 memory, and new expensive motherboards.

It will be the more cost effective route to build a skt775 platform well into next year.

I usually shoot for ARS Technica's Hot Rod build, which is mid-range cost. Cost and noise are major factors. Everything is fast these days. The Spinpoints are quieter which is important for me and it was only $110 or so. I almost went with DDR-1066 memory but I saw something that said 800mhz was all the bandwidth this config could actually use. I'll probably use it as it then try to overclock in a few months once it starts to feel slow.

I've got everything together. Looks like the video card will be here today. That's the last piece other than a multi-card reader. I just don't know if I want to go with 64-bit Linux yet. i think it's still missing some things.

Ok, who is going to build me one?

Nothing fancy, 4 gig of RAM or more.
2 hard drives 500g each

front slot media reader.

Using for Photoshop, digital photo editing, general net use.

I don't play games or shit on it so no need for the over the moon video card.

or should I just go to Bestbuy or Compusa and buy one.

50K to the person that finds me the best deal.

What fsb speed is that cpu rated for, I thought it was 1333 for the q9550.

You have Mac user written all over you...

I'm shocked you want a PC.

Seriously.

Is the SeaSonic power supply one of those with the modular cable system? I put one of those in my present system when I assembled it (August 2007) and was hoping the power cables would make everything all neat and tidy, since supposedly you only use what you need. But it's still just as messy as any other build, I was a little dissappointed in that aspect. On the other hand, the power supply has been reliable, and it runs relatively cool and quiet. It seems to be a quality piece.

This one is not modular. I meant to get one like that, but I forgot when it came time to order. The case does make it possible to route extra cables behind the motherboard which is cool. There are even places to tie the extras down. The air flow is pretty good in there. I do like clean cabling.

QT Federal Spank Bank has taken in more deposits than the previous safe could accomodate. :p

I use Ubuntu Linux. I just surf, burn movies/music and do some image processing. This way I don't have to worry about viruses or software costs. I have 4GB of RAM now. I have Windows XP set up in a vmware guest if I really need something.

Aerocool makes a great modular cable PSU. Quieter than a whisper too.

Im thinking of picking up COD World at War today.
