Finally made the switch to Windows 7 and so far

I'm impressed. Damn this fucker installed so fast I think I've waited twice as long for some games to install to XP. And the automatic driver install is cool too. It'll be fun digging into this OS, especially with some games. Half Life 2 + mod gets first dibs. Also want to try Metro: 2033, and of course Crysis.

Is Crysis worth getting now that I actually have a PC that can handle it?

a friend of mine downloaded a mech warrior mod for crysis that made him nauseous, but said it was awesome. I dunno, I guess his multi screen setup and the fast pace of the game made him want to puke...:whatever:

Here's what Windows 7 served me up about three or four days ago:

At least they kept the look-and-feel of the blue screen of death.

What the hell do you do to get such bad luck with PC's lol?

I'm not sure. This little tablet PC really doesn't do more than Intrawebs, email and a fe MS office apps.

Now my Dell laptop gets punished. I go from 45MB PowerPoint presentations, huge SolidWorks models and huge RapidForm XOR models. I can practically smell the burning silicon.

Ahhh... this is more like what I normally get. Here's the Dell -- It just did a thermal shutdown a few minutes ago while I was working in RapidForm XOR.

I've had it since Beta (8 months?) and never got a freeze up or what plunkdunk is getting.

about to order a new computer and got the option of 7 or downgrade to xp... highly considering xp downgrade which is actually an upgrade

If it were XP or Vista take the downgrade but seriously, Windows 7 is ready for primetime...and if it's a desktop go ahead and go 64-bit for the extra memory.

it'll be a desktop. Was going to look at the new HP's with the All in one b/c i hate having a separate processor. Any use of them? I will mostly use it for work at home, some word, excel, email and internet.. not a gamer or anything

I run both on different computers but don't have an apples-to-apples comparison. My Win7/Lenovo system does wussy work and crashes. My XP/Dell system does heavy lifting and crashes differently (mostly thermal).

your knowledge of computers far exceeds mine

ever use hp? what is your take on them?

I'm not a fan of all in one's but those have reviewed fairly well. I don't like the idea of one bad part obsoleting the whole system.

my mac never crashes...just sayin'

Don't get me started!

I'll spend more time this week on keeping my Dell connected to its printer than I've spent maintaining my mac over the last three years.

if you're having thermal problems you "probably" have too much gear packed into too small a case. Either get a full tower with lots of fans...for this you'll have to get the case from a seperate vendor like thermaltake, companies like Dell have retarded cases. Or invest in water cooling.

Plunk, my guess is that Lenovo was upgraded to Win7 and didn't come that way? Its probably a memory leak issue. I'm guessing it works for a while after a hard boot and then after some time running gives the BSOD again?

Yup. I suspect a leak as well. It's got some funky graphics update issues with the tabs on IE, has trouble ending programs and occasionally hangs-up opening new windows (i.e. it's running out of GDI handles and/or windowing resources).

It was shipped with XP tablet edition but I wiped it completely and did a recovery disc level reinstall of Win7.

Depending on the model of the Lenovo, I think one of the memory modules is soldered and then there are one or two open SO-DIMMS. If its the soldered one it would require replacing the board which if it came with XP type hardware probably wouldn't solve the problem. Better off getting a netbook with Win7 for what would probably be the cost of a tech to come replace the board in the Lenovo.
