Just in case anyone was interested in these...

seen those before.. like both ideas but think the cable guys way is a little safer. I've always wanted to try it, but always been too lazy to build it.

good post though, im sure a few people on this board will be implementing these into their training program soon... they appear to be a great exercise.

So why'd they call him 'Big' Tony Scrivens????

Great articles Bfold. Been wondering whether I shoul dincorporate these......figure I will.

He is about 5'8" or so...maybe 5'10" and his hands are freaking huge!!! I have pretty big hands and could barely shake hands with him...lol.

No problem. I'll post a pic of mine this evening. All of these are the "makeshift" ones though...there are lots of good ones but they cost lots of $$.

Here is a pic of Tony Scrivens using a set of Mastiff Strength farmers. They make good equipment but they cost quite a bit. $330 for a set.

hmm I may be able to make something like that

I'm going to home depot today to pick up some materials

hehe i've been investing a lot of money into equipment lately

Good equipment, used properly, can last forever.

I don't totally understand the need for the first article. Why would you have to build a seperate attachment for the dumbells, why not just use the dumbells' handles? The second one made more sense because you may not have heavy enough dumbells. Is there anything wrong with just using two ezcurl bars? Is there some standard grip thickness that I might be missing here?

I used dbells for quite a while and even did the 160's for a time or two of 60ft. They put a lot of stress on the wrist and you can only go so heavy.

Then I used EZ curl bars but they put a lot of stress on the wrist also. They put more stress on the wrists than they do the rest of the body.

A good set of farmers walk lowers the center of gravity of the weight so that it becomes more of a total body stressor exercise. Every one has a different thickness, feel, balance, length, etc...so they all feel different.

Oh I see, that makes a lot of sense now. EZ curl bars seem like they would be pretty harsh on the wrists now that I think about it... I need to rig up something, farmers walks look like so much fun. :)

They really are pretty fun as long as you are not going super heavy...then they get super intense and very painful.

Look on the thread "Another Fun Sunday, 6-9-02" that I just posted...I posted a pic of mine on there.

You can probably ask a few people who came to train with me this past weekend how effective of a back and trap builder that these are!!!!

I'll go ahead and answer without being asked...they are very, very effective! They will definitately leave you sore if you havent done them before.

For those thinking about making some farmers...or using them to increase their GPP.

;) Thank, B. That was fast. Can't wait to get mine built. Must have rotating handles though. :D

Yep, just like the herc hold...I have some hefty callouses and I can rest the bar in them, making the grip too easy. With large, revolving handles I'd have to work harder to hold it. :D

With enough weight on them...the grip wouldn't be 'too easy' :)

Thanks B-True.

I plan on making mine out of a pair of old gas cylinders and welding handles on them. Then I can adjust the weight by adding sand to each one.

An idea for farmers with rolling handles.Make the base the same as any other set of farmers, but for the handle, use a set of handles like usually used for the cable crossover.....just cut the bottom part off,and weld them to the main part of the farmers implements.
This would work your grip alot, but personally I just use db's to hit my grip more. For some people it can get to a point with the farmers to where you dont even worry about your grip anymore, but have to worry more about supporting the weight with your shoulders and back....Then again, others can support a ton of weight, but cant hold on to them.I guess just as with anything else, its a matter of finding out your strengths and weaknesses, and working to fix your weak points.
