Every job requires a Masters

New member
Two months after graduation, and still no interviews for a job. I'm going to have to sell my body soon if this keeps up :(

hmmm...you could teach?? or go back to school. Be a Dr. Job market sucks right now unless you happen to have one of those niche degrees with high demand like engineering.

Yeah I know. I'm trying to get into health research/education/promotion, but everything requires a Masters or Ph.D. There's a few hospitals here and there that are hiring for a health educator that only requires a Bachelor's, so I guess eventually I'll get something. I don't want to go back to school, so that's out. I'll probably end up taking a management position in retail or something. Blah.

Bro that's a PERFECT ba to apply for a Pharm rep position! That's what i'm going back to school for =)

That's actually what all of my professors suggested I do. That's what they all had to do in order to eventually do what they wanted to do. Problem is, I'm an ugly man with no tits, so I'll get passed over for some hot blonde.

The best opportunities in life are the ones you create for yourself. I hated having to deal with Morons who determined my fate.

you should still try though. they like you fresh out of school types.

Try checking for jobs in sites with local listings like county employment offices, not hot jobs, monster and that crap...

The dream of the pharmacy rep died about 3-5 years ago.

Now don't get me wrong. If you are female, have a banging body, a great face and a 3.5 in sciences with a degree or better, I'd give you a 50/50 shot. But the recent changes in healthcare have insured that anything less of that simply isn't going to fly.

First of all, I am sorry you don't have a position waiting. A college degree should at least get you a shot at a sound career.

Having said that, thank Barry. He's destroyed entry-level professional jobs. The irony isn't lost on me that the kids who rushed out to vote and get him elected are crippled (perhaps long-term, which is a shame) by his economic policies.

apricot seeds, owning your own nutrition store, selling gear at a higher price than u pay for, flipping cars are all the latest ways to make money bro. Im about to start my store soon and you guys will be surprised how much ima make, maybe not a lot at first but im only 21. By the time I am 25 I will be flipping houses, cars, making thousands per month with my nutrition business and eventually open up my own store. Gotta be an entreprenuer, fuck school. What a waste of time lol just take some classes that are applicable to real life situations. Speech classes, financial classes, etc.

How did you do in your writing classes?

Several things that might be a factor

1.) perhaps your resume sucks, or is not applicable to the position you're applying for. cover letters go a long way. and not just a bullshit copy and paste cover letter. one that is specific to the company you're applying for

2.) you're not correctly targeting prospective employers. a large majority of jobs are not advertised. Doing research on firms in the field is a huge part of job hunting, as well as creating some type of contacts within that organization

3.) you're not utilizing or haven't established a strong network. something like 75% of jobs are ultimately acquired through networking.

4.) 2 months isn't really a long time. 3-6 months is the average amount of time it takes for someone to find a job.

5.) what's your job search radius like? are you limiting yourself geographically?

you need to start taking more of those financial classes because by those statements you have zero idea of profit margins in any of those industries

two words; feasibility analysis

sorry bro but a degree doesn't guarantee a job. there are millions of grads that come out every 6 months with bachelor degrees. you have a lot of competition. the private sector doesn't care about degrees.. I recommend a government or military job. they put you ahead of others.. the private sector wants experience and skill.

I am a business owner and have no interest in college grads, thats the harsh reality of todays economy. I want skills/experience, not degrees.

He's gonna make it up on volume!

Do you know the story of the turnip farmer? He was losing money on every sale, but do you know how he made it up? Volume! Maybe someday he could buy a bigger truck.

all your life you are told by teachers and guidance counselors that you have to get an A, you have to get a high SAT score, you have to be in the Latin Club, you have to go to college. if you don't you are a loser and you will be a loser forever.

its just not true bro.

In many, many areas of the private sector, this is spectacularly bad advice.

There are definitely some jobs that don't require college degrees, but don't kid yourself that it's even 40% of the higher-paying jobs.

i think you should get a Masters man, most people end up loving it (I sure as hell did) and you can get funding for most sciency-engineeringish majors

also i hated my jobs pre-masters and love the one i have post-masters

Funny, i had just the opposite lol

Have you tried selling insurance? I think you can still do that with just a BA.

I was gonna suggest drug rep, but I see some others have stated that they're only hiring hawt chicks nowadays. It's good strategy, as there are still more male docs than female docs...and docs don't want to see a drug rep unless there is something in it for them (picking up the tab for lunch/dinner, sponsoring them to give talks, ect) A hawt chick can get a male doc to set aside 30 minutes in his busy day just by wearing something low-cut...much more cost-effective than having to dip into the expense account.

Seriously, though... didn't you have a plan before graduation? Where'd you intern? If you knew what you wanted to do involved "research" or "education", then yeah, you're on the PhD track (and they're probably worse off than college grads).

Do you even know the scope of your target industry? Work in a lab. Do compliance work. Regulatory. Front office, back office. And don't think you have any choice of where you want to live -- you go where the offers are. If you didn't graduate prepared, knowledgable, and competitive, then sorry, you're at a huge disadvantage.

Taking on MOAR debt to listlessly wander back to school without any focus is the worst thing you could possibly do at this point. Terminal master's are usually cash cows, and with no experience, they can put you worse off than before.

Great advice here. Decide precisely what job you want at the end of this process, find out the exact requirements for that job, and then proceed to acquire those requirements.

dude who the fuck can do that, gtfo with that advice

I agree that it's almost impossible to plan your career early-on. But people still need to have a destination in mind. Eisenhower put it best:

"Plans are nothing; planning is everything."

Oh I definitely have a plan. There are hospitals and clinics out there that are hiring for health promoter/educators and only require a bachelor's, they're just hard to find. I'm not limiting myself geographically, but the downside is a lot of the jobs are centralized in Atlanta or Rockwall/Gaithersburg, Maryland. Outside of those places, a lot of the jobs are for physicians and/or researchers high up on the chain. I can do lab work to get a few years XP in, and I might end up doing that.

if i had your degree i'd go to dental school. but being i'm a schmuck that never went to college and only did construction trade classes as i went along don't listen to me. now i just switched careers (i still have my pension from forst career)and will hopefully be a conductor or engineer in 4 years. I always wanted to be a dentist but never had the patience for school. can't sit still but i am very good with my hands.

have you looked into lab work in companies like pfizer?? bad example because of recent layoffs but its what comes to mind because its based in my state...I mean what was your end goal? research? working with people?..

Working with people, definitely. I don't want to be stuck in an office forever writing analysis documents on health topics so the professors and doctors can take credit for it.

hmmm...in what capacity? I mean, why isn't a masters an option?

uhmmm...you had to know that pretty much any of the healthcare fields where you work with people require a masters at the least...Im not chastising...but I am calling bullshit a little here
were you goin for med school and couldnt get in...or what?

No, I thought about med school but I decided grad school wasn't for me. And I'm not going for health care, I'm going for research/promotion/CHW. That's different.

2 months isn't really that long. I was out of work for 7 months and i applied to probably 100 jobs and out of that, I got about interviews for about 4-5 different jobs.
The company I now work for, I applied to for about 20 different jobs. LOL
