Of course there are completely out of your control things like car accidents. Rape? Well that is totally relative. If it's as random as a car accident (i.e. rapist is hiding behind a wall and says "I'm gonna rape next person that walks by") then yes. But in many cases, no.

And illness, I'm half and half on this. I'm sure there are a group of islanders somewhere who have never seen a sneeze or cough and don't even know what one is, so they never sneeze or cough. (sort of like a story I read recently about how Darwin believed there were some islanders he passed when sailing who did not see his ship b/c they had no concept of what a ship was so they couldn't even comprehend it). Also, I see a TON of people who get sick (not talking cancer here) and it's very clear that it's a physical manifestation of their current state of emotions.

i wasn't referring to the date rape variety where susan the slut wears her stripper shoes and then says 'no' once she's already in bed. I meant the totally impersonal variety. and I didn't mean a smoker who feels they were cursed with bad luck when they are told about a spot on their lungs- i meant the average healthy woman who gets breast cancer or whatever.

I do think that people allow others to treat them shitty most of the time though, and that most 'bad luck' isn't really 'luck' at all.

And 6 week infant thing - I NOTED THE WORLD "ADULT" SEVERAL TIMES.

I went back and looked, no mention of adult. But okay.

So, an old lady living her life away in her own home in isolation for the most part. Some assplant breaks in, to rob and rape her - she dies as a result of the attack.

You're saying she did something to bring that on to herself? It's just simply not possible for that to have been completely random?

Seriously, you guys need to NOT use extreme examples and "not even possible" examples since I have not used them myself.

ok, here's an example of how i agree with you...
as i've said here- i was mugged at an atm. I did know it wasn't the safest one to go to, but it was the closest one to my house at the time and it's not always possible for me to drive to other towns.

So. i knew it was ME who chose to go to that atm, but of course, i had nothing to do with some crackhead trying to knock me down. I fought back- he ended up in the hospital and died.

I could have let that bother me. I could have let it effect my life in other ways and i could have said that something i had no control of happened to me and that's why i'm depressed or angry or whatever. but... i didn't let it get to me. That was in MY control, and i took it.
