Eliptical Machine and Calories.. 60 minutes?

I have flat feet and bunions and alot of trouble with me feet, ankles, knees, and hips. So ive started to use the eliptical machine instead of running like i normally do to lesson the shock on the joints from pounding your feet while running. I have to say that i really like the eliptical machine and feel it gives a real good workout. Ive been doing 60 minutes 3 times a week. One question that I have is that during this 60 minutes i burn 1000 calories according to the machine.. while trying to keep my heart rate between 170 and 180. Is this too much to be burning? Wont this cause muscle catabolism? Ive read Warlobos post about pushing for the extra time and going for the full 60, but im afraid that burning 1000 calories on an empty stomach in the morning cant be good.. before i loose all my muscle and turn into a small guy.. someone please let me know if this is ok..
 
I use the elliptical and I averge 11 cals a minute. 1000 an hour is too fast, I'd say. Either increase the ramp and your intensity or slow your strides down. Trust me, you'll burn fat at a lower speed.

I do just about the highest ramp but my effort setting is 3 or 4.

Do recall that WarLobo (much as this post changed my life) was writing for women who have (1) more fat than men and (2) areas where fat is very hard to burn.
 
If i lower my intensity and everything else that you say.. then i will not be in my target heart rate.. and that wouldnt make sense now would it?
 
Like warlobo said over in that post, if you're going to cut, you're going to cut, meaning you're going to have accept some muscle loss...If you're trying to bulk or maintain, I doubt doing that much cardio can be good for results.
 
You could try intervals, and see if that works. But the target heart rate thing might be what's keeping you seeing the results you want. You might be working at a higher intesnity than you think. The fat-burning zone is pretty darn low, compared to CVS training. What have you got to lose by trying a lower intensity--it won't be catabolic, now will it?
