DOLBY 5.1 Experts needed!

Hey guys what's up?! I bought a Sony WEGA 27" TV this weekend and I have a DVD that DOES NOT HAVE A DOBLY DECODER. After looking around the net for 5.1 specs it's a very confusing ordeal.
Can anyone break it down for me?
I think I need a decoder (or a 5.1 receiver) plus a 5.1 speaker package which contains 5 sat and a sub (5.1)

Is there a real difference between 5.1 and just a 4 speaker with a sub surround system? Is it worth the extra couple hundred for a dolby system?

I watch some DVD's (not a ton) but I hear my Cable sucks for sound compared to Satallite TV. (And it's digital I think). Is it still worth it?

I would spend the extra dough and go with a Dolby/DTS decoder receiver. I just did that, and the sound, especially from DTS or THX is unbelievable. My dog went over to the surround speakers repeatedly during a scene that had running water in it.

How much did that setup cost? I know when it comes to sound the DTS can't be beat, I was just wondering how much better it is then a 4 sat and sub surround setup.

I have two main channels 2 x 2
center
surround up in the ceiling pointing down on yah.

so:
three across the front
two in the back
two above


mine is old or I would have a sub.
that would make it 8.
my buddie runs 12 out of his carver.

i just purchased a 7.1 receiver, but there is only one dvd out right now that utilizes it, i forgot the title. all it is is a center rear speaker added. and yes dolby digital/DTS is the way to go bro. You should go buy a good receiver and a digital ready dvd player. digital sound is my forte so to speak. shit i have over 400 dollars worth or cables in my sound system. Its definitely some cool shit for good movies with good sound, pearl harbor was awesome, thought i was flying a fucking plane.
so at least the the 5.1 system, RF, FL, front center, RR, LF, and sub. and for satellite tv, you have to have a digital receiver, big bucks from DTV and not all their programming even uses digital sound. Some cable services offer digital now, not sure about which ones though, but the benefits come from the DVD's bro. by the way, nice fucking TV!!
