I've had dogs before, and I know a lot about them. I consider myself an experienced dog owner. I've researched many dog breeds to find out what dog breed I'd like to own one day, and I actually really love the Akita. It looks like such a beautiful breed, and it's temperment seems the like the kind I like in a dog. I've researched, but there is nothing like real life experience. Can anyone tell me what to watch for/the pros/the cons of owning an Akita? It would be muchly appreciated

I have close friends that owned one, great dog. Mellow temperment. Very loyal. beautiful dogs.

They are beautiful dogs, they're guard dogs right? I think they have a reputation for being a powerful/dominant/aggressive breed, so if you're OK with that, go for it.
I also really like the Shiba Inu, a smaller variant. they are a real handful I hear :) But cute as hell.

they are protective of their owners and family, but I wouldn't say aggressive.

Akitas are for experienced dog owners, since they constantly try to be Alpha they need someone who can take charge, train them and remind them they are NOT the Alpha, they are stubborn, dominant and protective, if you socialize them constantly, exercise them DAILY and train early in their lives you should be good to go.

Do you currently have other dogs?

No other dogs, what about shedding...besides when they blow their coats do they shed much?
I live in south florida so would this mean constant super shedding?

my friend has an 2 akitas, and an akiat/great dane mix and the akitas are great dogs. loyal and protective with little to no aggression for unwarrant reasons. only downside is the amount of fury they shead

my friend had an Akita. sweetest dog ever. they're beautiful too

i don't like big dogs for the most part but that's one dog i'd definitely think about getting

Get an English Bulldog breh, once you've owned this breed you'll never want anything else, seriously

My roommate when I was in grocery store produce special training school had one, she was white with like light brown patches, her name was Lou Lou Baines, she was fucking awesome.

Lifelong experience with many dogs, but very little with Akitas as you said... I did take care of one for a few months for a friend who went in the service, and I found him to be REALLY hyper, and maybe a bit aggressive. Definitely out to fight other male dogs, and he was BIG. Also a lot of work to maintain that white coat. As far as other details, I recall a slobbering problem, but that's probably not a big deal if the dog is an outdoor dog, and if well-trained not to jump all over people who might not want to get all that "puppy love".

With that said, I think all dogs are excellent pets, provided the owner is wise about selecting a breed and personality.

I have owned two Akitas at two different times in my life and they are just like everyone is saying...beautiful, loyal, and very protective of THEIR family or pack!! Yet...they are very very stubborn and their attention span is very short, just in case you take it to an obediance school. Never had a better protector of my little nieces and nephews and cousins....but would NOT obey my girlfriend whatsoever!!!
