Does Anybody Volunteer Regularly?

musclemom

I Told You So ...
EF VIP
I mean IRL.

If so, how did you get started?

I volunteer to help ole folks cross the road and shit.

I was thinking of volunteering somewhere Christmas day. I have no family here, my friends will be out of town, and it's my ex's year to have the pet human. Doing something productive would be much better than sitting at home being miserable, possibly poisoning myself with ethyl.

2 Sundays every month (4-5 hours at a time) my wife and I volunteer at the Anti-Cruelty Society here in Chicago. We primarily bathe all the new dogs after they are taken in. Occasionally we'll work on the floor helping out with the adoption process.

We got started because we have dogs and wanted to do something for animals aside from simply donating money.

Cue weakmo making a tired joke about how asians eat dogs.

Im working for a Non Profit Right now ( I work with the President Directly)
He was a good Defense attorney ( think old school lawyers that gave a shit)
who now helps abused women and children with emphasis on NVC and getting past "your past"

how did I start? Pure accident, chance meeting

Prob never volunteered because I haven't evolved enough yet

just sayin'
Me neither, so don't feel bad.

High Priestess says we should do more to give back to the community and the animal shelter has more people than they know what to do with and that's about the only thing I'd actually enjoy doing. I can't find fuck all except working with old people and I basically listen to their stories of death and deterioration all fucking week long in my job, do I actually have to WATCH them doing it in my free time?!

I was hoping someone around here did something cool that could give me some ideas.

I don't have a lot of free time, but I give blood to somehow give back to the community.

And am on the bone marrow donor match list.

You can volunteer at a children's hospital.

Not only you are helping them but also doing something for yourself. Being in that environment it sort of puts things in perspective.
I know you are going through a tough time right now, so maybe that would help a little.

just an idea

Yep....Do soup kitchen and habitat for humanity with my church now....used to volunteer with an animal rescue group in the DC area...I met them by simply going to one of the events and inquiring about involvement.

Generally speaking that's the best way to go about it. Depending on the kind of thing you want to get into, find out where they are doing it, and just show up. None of those places will turn down an extra set of hands.

See if there's a rescue group, non shelter, near you. They frequently need help with animal transportation, adoption events, etc.

Actually the shelter (that is reasonable to drive to) turned my stepdaughter down, they actually have more people than they can use. She told them she'd do anything, dishwashing, cage cleaning, anything. They said "Thanks, we'll keep you in mind" two months ago.

I take it as a sign of the regional economy. There are just too many people with too much time on their hands.

I dont volunteer because I am a filthy selfish atheist :dodgy:

I also volunteered at the local SPCA and animal shelter and got turned down, seems they have too many people as well, I also tried to volunteer to help the local veterans and was also advised they don't need people they need money.... then I saw a program for mental rehabilitation for soldiers and I volunteered and they also said they need funds and not people..... I tried.... :(

as follows things I've done..none of which I'm doing now

local dog pound..dog walking kennel cleaning...some light dog training to make them adoptable
german shepherd dog rescue transportation ( this was you pick a leg to drive for like two hrs with strange dogs in your car) I really liked it and always got a kick out of the dogs
soup kitchen several christmases running (church I didn't belong to, they were happy for the help)
sitting/visiting with the elderly and training and cert-ing my jack russell as a therapy dog ton visit the elderly in primarily nursing homes..I did that for 5 years usually once a week for about 3 hrs..not a lot but I've met some amazing people
of course the ambulance..first as an emt then as a medic for at least one shift a week for 9 years before allowing my license to lapse (Im also guilty of showing up for just really crazy calls)
sept. 11th, medical aid which was never actually needed..I mainly took blood pressures of relief workers and handed out water
when I was cpr instructor certified I taught community classes ...this was waiving my fee but not the american heart assoc. fee for the cert...nothing I can do about that
volunteered at several community clean-up rehab kinda thingies
volunteered for every food drive I've been asked to help in (cpl dzn)
and I think Im going to volounteer at the local food bank here shortly

I'd volunteer at a trading desk or museum or national laboratory or something cool, but the only volunteer opportunities to abound seem rather mundane.

:cow:

That's why I suggested a rescue organization (not a shelter)....the kind of operation that relies on foster care, donated vet care, etc.

I walk dogs from the humane society once a week, been doing it for years. I might house the next goat they get. When I get rid of stuff I donate it to Paws 'n Claws.

Oh that sounds nice. I like animals but just don't have time for a pet myself. I think that would be good.

Good thread MM I volunteered when I was younger a fair bit but haven't in years.

Oh thats another awesome idea. I have thought about applying for a big sister role to.

If you like art, you should volunteer at a non-profit museum. They're always looking for help. I have a few times. The docents of the Salvador Dali museum by me are all volunteers. They go to a class, then give tours in their spare time, but there are lots of types of volunteer opps at those places.

I also used to volunteer at a children's home (I guess 'orphanage' isn't PC?). We'd usually just play games and throw them a little pizza party or something once a month. It was really nice. They love people making them feel special, because the children's home def does not (i.e. they celebrate all birthdays of a month on one day).

If you're looking for something that requires a little less organization, 2 Christmases ago I wanted to volunteer at a soup kitchen or something of the like, but by the time I went to sign up, all the spots were full for Christmas, so my friend and I bought some food in bulk and made a bunch of brown bag lunches and drove around handing them to the homeless people who didn't land a spot in the shelter for Christmas.

Those are the most enjoyable things I've done. Good luck finding something.

Damn I just seen this, missed an awesome oppertunity to point out how ironic this is, being that Dog is the number two food source of Asian's, right behind cats.

The local HH chapter acted like a bunch of douchebags when I tried repeatedly to volunteer with them. They never called me back and when I kept calling them they behaved like I was bothering them. I could not believe it.

As for other stuff, I used to volunteer with The Atlanta Food Bank a lot and do fund raising for leukemia and lymphoma research. Have to admit I've not been nearly as consistent with my volunteerism since I got married. I've done the volunteer work at the animal shelter as well.

i'm active (member/board member/volunteer/participant/etc) in...

our local toys-for-kids organization,
our local rotary club,
our local economic development corporation,
the finance council at our church and
the city municipal authority.

I really have to hand it to you guys, a whole lot of people give freely of themselves and their time, I'm both surprised and impressed and vaguely shamed ...
