How many of you keep a detailed training log?

lol... do I need to post "yes" :p

I keep a written paper training log whether or not i was journaling online.

It's the only way to know if your progressing really... unless you have a memory compacity that rivals a computer.

I keep a notebook that is always with me in the gym... I dont necessarily go through it all the time... but it is useful to jog your memory about specific weights/reps from past workouts so you know that you are progressing

You bet...I keep a notebook of my progress. Makes it fun - and hella motivating - to look back and see what you started with. Track both body weight and lifting weights.

Ive done it before but haven't done it lately. It does help I admit, but I can remember what I squat, dead, bench, shoulder press pretty easily. I dont really care what I curl, tri pull down, etc... I usually just raise up the weight if I start getting too many reps.

But i'll restate what I said before, it does help and I would encourage newbies (can I use that word here?) to indeed keep a log of what they do as it will help in the long term (plus its fun to look back and see what you did, months or years ago).

I have an excel sheet with all the dates etc.. I print out what I plan on doing, fill in the shit... then transpose it to the excel sheet... does the trick...

I do the same. Just easier to me to type it in and then print it to take with you to the gym. I do the same for cycles and my food.

i track my training. with that i'll also include comments which sometimes means mentioning diet and proposed diet changes too - although diet is something i'm not too scientific about, i just ensure enough protein and then play it by intuition with the carb intake - fats will come anyway.

I always try to take my exercise book to the gym. If for some reason it gets forgotten then I'll write down the workout on some scrap of paper and then transcribe it to my exercise book.

Now that I have a home gym, I've skipped occasional sessions where I've just gone out to do some light squats and arm work while dinner is cooking, for example, but I log all my real workouts.

It's invaluable for looking back to check whether you've made progress. I even had a case yesterday where I had a max lift in mind when I started the workout. Between sets, while flicking back through my logs, I realised that I'd misremembered a previous session from three weeks ago and had hit 2.5Kg more than I was intending to do. I bumped the intended weight by 5.5Kg and hit a new 0.5Kg PR.

one day many years from now, it's good to break out the detailed training log and know everything you did exactly that day, down to every warmup set and rep and how you felt

then you will notice patterns of some things working, and others not working, and how you felt with certain combos of things

it's a nice feeling
