Almost everything is possible.
Not in our lifetime though..

there are some theories/dilemmas that seem to prove the negative, like the Grandfather paradox (go back in time to shoot your grandfather before he ever had kids-you wouldn`t exist, so you wouldn`t have gone back there either and hes still alive)

but those who claim it is possible say that every moment in time gives a new universe and they are in fact not attached, so you could go back and shoot him and the universe your from would just have been another one in which he does live. this would give an unlimited number of different realities.

I know for a fact one could do it

What people dont relize is that as time goes by we move(the earth). Every day the earth is in a new location in the universe, this is true Becasue the univers is expanding, getting bigger in relation with time. So in order to travel BACK in time you have to move twords the center of the universe, which is the beggining of time. Only problm is you have to leave the earth behind, so you could not for example see your self in the past. If anything you could see a different planet in the past. Works on the same pricable as traveling across the face of the earth, it may be a diferent time on the other side of the planet, but you cant visit there without leaving your house.

Highly improbable(I neversay impossibe)

I'll show you why:

According to the special theory of relativity:

This equationis known as a time-dilation equation

T2 = T1 / (root of)[ 1 - v2/c2 ]

Where,

T2= perceived time by an observer
T1= Actual time experienced by the object
v= Speed of object
c= speed of light=constant

Now, lets look at what happens when v > c

Re-arranging the equation we get:

T2[ (root of)[1- v2/c2) = T1

Now, v2/c2 > 1.00000

So,

T2(root of)(- X ) = T1

Now, further extrapolating, the root of a negative integer
becomes a complex number

i.e. (root of)[-X] = (root of)(X) * i

Therefore,

T2 * (root of)[ X] * i = T1

So, the relationsip between T2 and T1 is prortional
to (root of)[X] * i

Since Complex numbers come in the form a + ib
(Same principleas a x,y co-ordinate plane,
except a complex plane is called an ARGAND diagram)

Then the proprtionality only has a vertical function that HAS
to be positive.
So basically the range is y = (0,infinity)

What does all this mean?

That time is LINEAR and you cant go out-side of time.

Godspeed

uhhmm...can you repeat the question HAHAHAHAAHAHA

This thread is truly interesting.

Fact is we just have no proof yet.

Fucking interestin stuff!

Anyone can recommend any books on professional opinions on this subject?

There was an experiment. Two perfectly synchronised clocks were used. One clock went intoa spaceshipo and other clock stayed at home.

The clock that rode the spaceship TICK SLOWER, meaning that it did travel to future.

For some reason when you travel faster, your 'clock' slows down . It means that for 1 second you were alive
much more time has passed. Result, you travel to future.

That experiment shows it works. And I am quite sure Einstein supported similar theory.

Wow! I replied to this thread a long time ago, and I can't believe how many people here think time travel is possible! Come on guys...We invented "time," it's only a concept. Further, since we invented time, we control it...It doesn't control us. If we want to travel back in time all we have to do is set our watches back or write 1002 on all of ou calendars from now on...BAM, we just travelled back 1000 years.

Once again...Time is not a physical entity...it only exists in our minds. No mathematical formula can change how fast time moves because, by definition, it move at one second per second. There's no slowing it down, or speeding it up...that is unless we change our definition of time.

It's interesting to debate, but the idea of time-travel is idiotic, and I can't believe people waste their time developing these mathematical formulas for time travel...they'll get close...but they'll never get there. It can be likened to diverging indefinate integrals (for you math majors out there:) )Like this one:

1/X...What does this equation equal as X goes to infinity? The answer is 0, although the actual equation never reaches zero...it will keep getting closer and closer...But will it ever get there? NEGATIVE!

Now if you time-travelers out there can find me a positive value for X that makes the equation equal 0 (or a negative number), then I'll hop on the bandwagon and go back and attack Hitler with you...but until then...I'll stay right here at whatever time it is now. :)

I read it.

RELATIVE or not. When you spend 1 second on high speed spaceship and 10 seconds pass on earth, yeh its relative to you and spaceship. But who cares, you travel into the future. period.

You do travel INTO THE FUTURE. Since after 3600 seconds (1 hours) you are 36000 seconds (10 hours into the future! And with higher speeds sure you can make the difference in time of this 'relative" time more and more different - so for one second for YOU,
100 centuries pass on earth.

That is what matters. Hey, we are beating gravity (a force thats not on 3d geometric plane), why cant we beat time?

hmmmm....
