Do you think depressed people use the internet most?

Talked to a friend who doesn't do myspace, no IMs, no chat, no forums of any kind, rarely even emails, like once a week. Says that the internet is cool for looking up something like an address or movie time, but the social interaction is dominated by depressed people. Wasn't meant in a derogatory way at all, actually sounded like he felt sorry.

sounds like bs to me

Its communication. You post during commercials, between your daily activities, laugh at jokes etc. Nothing introverted, or depressing about it.

Plus it beats walking.

I don't think there is much merit there. There may be merit to socially inept people and low self-esteem persons being attracted to such a forum. But not to "depressed".

Depression is a hoax anyway

He sounds like a hermit, I need some interaction outside of work because I'm a social person and I don't go to clubs/bars very often. My friends are all married and I don't have a gf so my option are limited. I can get a better debate online than I can in real life because people are less restrained, which I prefer. Also, the internet has a wealth of knowledge outside of directions and movie times.

I agree with the "it's communication" part.

I've never had depression problems of any sort, lol. But I am much more of a writing-type than talking-type (ie., say, hypo, everyone was either one or the other).

I have some rather gregarious friends who don't use discussion boards or MySpace or anything, and it's mainly because of their preference of social interaction. Whether it's innate or their reading comprehension and writing skills lack, it's just awkward for them. Likewise, going to some strange, crowded bar and striking up random conversation about the local sports team with strangers is awkward for me.

I think we need to look at social interaction based on our current technology. Posting on EF is different than reading an opinion column or watching a television news show. People do interact, read at any BM thread, and share opinions/views. In certain circumstances, you could say the interaction is more "real" than day to day interactions with people.

I've never had depression problems either, and I don't agree, I don't think I've come across too many depressed types. A handful for sure, but I think in everyday life you don't know who's depressed because people don't spill their guts to stangers like people do here.

your friend is smart and spot on the money.
