Do I have to go to a psychiatrists for ADD??

I'll say this - about 99% of kids age 16-21 (ish) think they have ADD. Most don't - it just takes some self discipline and self control.

IMO General Prac. tell way too many ppl they have ADD when they do not.

To really get a proper diagnoisis see a psy or Neor psy . They have been trained in this field and can provide the proper test to adequately diagnosis you.

Most people do have ADD traits, but they are often symptoms of stress or just of times in their life and will not always be present. ADD is something that will be a life time disorder.

You don't get your car fixed by your hairdresser.. So don't get you brain looked at by your GP

A Neurologist is your best bet

But let me warn you ADD medication blows big time. Almost all of them are stimulants which will totally kill your appetite and long term use will have you addicted…even if it is a mental “need” you will find yourself nonfunctional without it. The script is non refillable as it is a controlled substance so plan on making a monthly trip to the doctors office. They do have one ADD med out there that is a non stimulant….total garbage. It takes over a month to even start to feel if it is working. The only plus to it is that it is not a controlled product and you can get refillable prescriptions.

Not true if u really do have add the medication actually takes 3 to 4 days to be effective

But it is a controlled substance and the scripts are highly monitored as they are often abused.

In very rare cases will they write scripts for more than months at a time

1. Wait time to see a specialist in neuro is a while most places.
1.5 Neuros make more money signing off on sleep studies, EEG's and NMF tests than seeing some kid who is too good to go to a GP
2. ADD is not something that is a life long disorder.
3. the DSM-IV criteria for diagnosis of ADD/ADHD are the same for GP as for neuro, there are no tests which test for "ADD" anways.
