Do I have to go to a psychiatrists for ADD??

Psychological tests.. there are..

They look at patterns in your life

I went through a LOT of testing before i was diagnoised.

And Yes it took alot of time. BUT the benefits of getting a proper diagnosis far outweigh the time i waited to get it.

My GP gave me alot of mis dioagnosis before i got the right one fromt he specialist and my life has changed alot since.

And ADHD doesn't go away.. it's a life time disorder. I won't wake up one day and not have it. I wish i would

1. Wait time to see a specialist in neuro is a while most places.
1.5 Neuros make more money signing off on sleep studies, EEG's and NMF tests than seeing some kid who is too good to go to a GP
2. ADD is not something that is a life long disorder.
3. the DSM-IV criteria for diagnosis of ADD/ADHD are the same for GP as for neuro, there are no tests which test for "ADD" anways.

maybe.. but for those who take the medication because they have adHd it's a life changer..

and worth the hassle

The tests they give you are the most annoying tests on earth.

Yes for any type of learning disorder like ADD or dyslexia it needs to be diagnosed by a psychiatrists, if you want to use it as an excuse for special treament and such.

No, there is no test for ADD, you said it yourself. All the physician can do is look at something from your life and guess it is ADD. Just because you feel you were misdiagnosed by your GP doesnt mean someone elses will make the same mistake.
Why even have a GP if you dont trust his or her advice enough to go to them with a potential problem? Patient autonomy is one thing. Picking and choosing the parts of your medical history is seen/treated/referred from your GP is only handicapping yourself.

Once again, adult onset ADHD is not a lifelong problem. Here is a link to the DSM-IV criteria for ADHD diagnosis. If you'll notice, the primary care clinician makes the initial diagnosis...

That's ridiculous. Read the DSM criteria if you want to. WHAT GOOD IS A GP If you dont let them do their job? Isn't going to a psychiatrist without proper referral exhibiting and acting on priori conclusions? There's a reason you are referred to a specialist, you dont just say I need a psychiatrist.

It's not really something that develops as an adult.. most adults have had it all there life and just found out about it.

My case is slightly different i was actually diagnoised as a child and was treated as a child, just stopped being treated for a long time for different reasons.

GP's just don't have the specialized skills.. to determine whether you really have it or not.

And Again true ADhd /add as with any true disroder of the3 mind is forever.. u cant jsut one day be cured.. makes no logical sense

mowhawk and cutie... you realize you guys are not arguing right? you are both explaining add or adhd but complimenting each other's statements rather than conflicting.

as far as GP goes... yeah go make sure it isn't something medical first then they will refer to a shrink... also makes it easier on your insurance with a referal.
