There was few jobs in college where I did fine but sort of quit without notice and disappeared. On one of those jobs my boss was a huge bitch. I was a manager of her real estate portfolio basically and did my job well while gettin paid shit. Then I ended up breaking my leg and decided it would be too much hassle to keep working so I told her I wont be able to come in for a while for which I got fired. Basically she has mental break downs and pmsd a lot. Should I use her as a reference? on a good day she could actually say somethin positive but it could also backfire.
I also did an important intership right before I graduated. During the finals I told the boss that I won't be able to come for a while but ended up never going back there. He was a good guy so I think he'll be less of a pain in the ass. I have some good references too but in case those are not enough is it acceptable to put down friends as references?

LOLOL, the answer is HELL NO! Ideally, your reference list should consist of people who are willing to say whatever they have to say to get you the job that you want. You should be able to call your references before the HR person contacts them, tell them about the job you're applying for, the qualities that they should emphasize that make you uniquely suited to the job, and tell them when the stupid bitch from HR is expected to call.

You see, HR people are the spawn of Satan. They have no marketable skills, as they are unable to work with numbers, tools, scientific equipment, household appliances, or compound words. That's why they chose a career in HR. One need only be a "people person" and enjoy 1.) talking incessantly and 2.) searching for deep meaning in people's answers to stupid questions like, "If you were a Twinkie, what would you be filled with?"

Thus, in summary, you should assemble a team of references that you can coach so that all of you can totally scam the C**T from HR standing between you and the job you want. If one of your old bosses is a crazy bitch, leave her off of your reference list and leave that fucking job off of your resume! :D

I don't think any of my references are actually real. They are all people I am friends with, even though I may have worked with/for them in the past.

Don't sweat references, half the time employers don't even check them, it depends what kind of job you are looking for. My "references" always would call me after they got called and maybe 1 out of 3 would actually get called.

I currently work for a Fortune 200 company so that can tell you a lot about HR people.

*cough* load of shit *cough* I guess that depends on your experience with them.

Everything else said is straight on. Fuck no don't list the bitch that you fired you - you never want anything negative to come out of a reference. You want people who loved you as references. Someone who'll say "I'd hire him back in a second"....etc.

That said, having glowing references doesn't mean much either. A negative reference is usually a deal breaker, a bunch of positives references means...okay, this candidate hasn't fucked up yet.

Try to avoid monkey jobs where you need b.s. 'references' to get it. Go for jobs where your skills and personality get you the job. Those are the jobs where you can demand higher salaries and have good job security.

hint: that references policy is b.s. Everyoen knows 99% of references always say positve things.
