Do breast implants last forever?

Do breast implants last forever - at least for the duration of your life?

I remember reading somewhere that they had to be replaced after X number of years. Is that true? How long then?

I tried searching different implant sites but couldn't find anything. If they do have to be replaced, then I guess it's not something they'd advertise a lot.

My understanding is that they don't have to be replaced after a certain number of years. However, people will have them replaced for any number of reasons, such as:

They want to switch the placement from above the muscle to below the muscle or vice versa.

They want to go larger or smaller.

They get capsular contraction around the implant and want to have that corrected, or other corrections for side effects.

Change in size, larger or smaller.

The nurse who was with me when I had my surgery had just had hers re-done because she was in a car accident, and had ruptured one.

Actually, I think you have to replace them every ten years.
But it depends on a lots of factors: What are they made of, how long you have them: are they from the first ones, etc.
And you can't forget that they get old and a bra can make them weaker.........

Doctors will generally recommend every 10-15 years, though some get replaced in the short term due to blow out / leakage, reduction/enlargement, complications due to capsular contracture, etc. And others have had them for 25 years! Remember that these are artificialy materials stuck in your body - they have a "shelf life" attributed to "normal wear and tear" and cant' regenerate themselves like your body can.

As far as rupture, I hear they are pretty durable - I heard a story about a lady who was in a massive car accident - she got shoved into the windshield and steering wheel of her car, but the "girls" survived!

A very good information site is www.implantinfo.com.

NOTHING lasts forever!......(except my love for my girls, that is what I always tell them when they ask me if ____ lasts forever :D )

Expect to get them replaced about 10years - like maintanence.

I actually saw on TV where a murder was solved because of some implants. Bones from 1/2 of a person's body was found in a marshy area. Absolutely nothing left of this person but they found what they thought were jellyfish hanging around the bones and dipped them up too. They were her breast implants in completely perfect condition. They had a serial number on them and that is how they were able to know who this person was because some of her bones, including her skull, were missing.

the implant forum is a great site. also you can expect to need to replace them in about 10 years. if you are young, and go under the muscle, your breast will progressively sag while the implant stays intact. it creates a bump look.you don't have to replace them, but several things can occur to cause you to need to. if you get them, expect to replace them for sure in your life time.

Wow - about every 10 years!? That's A LOT of times to have surgery! Even elective surgery is no piece of cake. So, does that mean all these teen and early 20's girls getting implants can expect to do about 5 more breast surgeries in their lifetimes? (That's assumming they decide to let everything go after the last one at age 70.)

There'll be some facelifts in my future (you have to keep up with those every 10 years or so), but to do breasts every 10 years too? Youch!
