DNP and Phenobarbital

Spartan.

This was discussed a long time ago at avant but nothing really came of it. The only study I can find on the matter;

[Effect of phenobarbital on the kinetics of the change in the level of paramagnetic metalloprotein complexes in dinitrophenol poisoning]

[Article in Russian]

Luk'ianchuk VD.

EPR spectroscopy was used to study phenobarbital influence on the kinetics of paramagnetic complexes variability of metal proteins--cytochrome P-450 and iron-sulfur proteins of rat liver in acute oral poisoning with the dinitrophenol pesticides DNOK and dinoseb. It was proved experimentally that the barbiturate favoured marked prevention of the decrease of the content of cytochrome P-450 and iron-sulfur proteins, thereby protecting the detoxifying and energy liver system from dinitrophenol-induced injuries. It is discussed that phenobarbital may act both as an inducer of cytochrome P-450 and iron-sulfur proteins involved in electron transport of the mitochondria.

A member posted stating that two members of his gym who used DNP had there sides severely lowered by taking phenobarbital. Any information in regards to this?

Weird. The only post on the thread mentioned that valium (a benzo) had the same effect.
Its has the same effect and it less addictive then valuim/xanax(benzo). When detoxing off benzo's there is a good chance of going in seizures but not with phenobarbital and like I said less addictive

I know they use phenobarbital to detox people off of benzo's

that's all I know

This is not true. What is true (that you said) is that bz withdrawl can lead to SZ and similar sx to EtOH withdrawl (DT, hyperthermia, anorexia, malaise, visual hallucinations (frequently seeing furry small crawling things)).

Treating BZ withdrawl with barbiturates is like saying they use heroin to detox people off codeine. BZ REPLACED barbiturates bc they are much safer. Respiratory depression is common to both, but it takes much LOWER doses of barbs to cause it.

Phenobart is a barbiturate which has a narrow therapeutic index (BZ are much bigger), and is really used as an anesthesia induction agent, if at all anymore. Only anesthesiologists really come into contact with this, and occasionally crazy psychiatrists who are treating depersonalization disorders.

Taking barbiturates (phenobarb) to reduce the purported radical damage caused by DNP is just plain foolish. You can kill yourself taking phenobarb. You can pass out from hypotension, and aspirate respiratory/gastric secretions and get yourself a nice pulmonary abscess and great case of pneumonia.

Listen, if you are going to take DNP, just take DNP. There are far better ways to loose weight, imo, but if you want to do it, its your body, but don't be a moron about it. Leave the barbiturates to the anesthesiologists.

I'm not claiming to be a doctor in any way shape or form, all I can share is my experience.
Fact: I went into a detox a year ago to detox off of Xanax(benzo). Phenobarbital is what they put me on for 3-4 days(I can't remember the dosage). Everyone at that detox, that was there for benzo's was on the phenobartital protocol. I know its a bartbiturate and don't know why they used it, or how it works but it definitely helped out with the w/d. It took the edge off and helped me sleep a little. When I was there I didn't question the meds I just did what the doctor ordered and IT WORKED FOR ME!!! and quite a few others at the detox

Just my experience!

Its a potentiator of GABA, so it could help with withdrawl, but pheno is not used much anymore, i only hear of it for seisures.

They all act at the GABA receptor, true bigrand.

To the poster above, in all honesty, they could have just as easily detoxed you off your BZ by giving you a "power hour" of beer tapered over several days. Just one shot qhour x 24 h, then q2h x 24 h, then q4h x 2 days, then two beers for the last day, and you would be fine.

Low-dose Phenobarb is prescribed as an 'anti-seizure' medication for those who are at risk, such as people in detox. It's likely that is why they presribe it during shock detox, it shouldn't have any effect on mental state, other than making you feel tired and slow. :coffee:
