DL Problem

I have this kid that I am training that has me completely stumped.

He can pull 405x12, 475x4, but the minute we put 500 on the bar he can't even break it off the floor.

You would think that he should at least be able to hitch it up for a single but no.

Thinking it was a head issue, I put kg marked plates on the bar so he had a harder time doing the math, but still the same thing.

I have even given him a set of straps (I really hated doing that) to see if I took his hands out of it, if it could be done.

Still nothing.

I was hoping anyone here could lend some thoughts on the issue.

Thanks!

Just one.

Assuming you aren't referring to the ones that got him to that point.

Why don't you have him doing several sets with that weight? saying like 6x3 to increase neural efficiency and also for him to feel more comfortable, I think that's more of a psicological milestone anyway...

I also have them do a "burn out" of 4x8x50% at the end of the DL portion of the workout. Would you drop that in lieu of your suggestion? I'm thinking of volume issues here.

his working max and actual max numbers are very close. that is something we all are supposed to strive for. is he getting his hips out too early? chest too far in front of him?

Thats one of the things - his form doesn't change, and its good. Its just like someone turned on some magnets.

you could be at his max effort right now. might be time to bring in the rack pulls and sldl to start working from different angles.

Yes i would drop that burnout.

I also like Timtim's suggestion.

Thanks guys. Its amazing sometimes how you can work at a problem like mad but still come to the same (wrong) conclusion. ;)

It might also be time to introduce him to some bands.

Thanks!

Hey Blaz, you could try elevating the weight set/ bar, something like 2-3"or even 4"off the floor.Work him up in reps and then start moving it down 1" at a time till he can do it off the floor. I read that this is how a lot of the Finns used to do it. I ve done it and it works very well for me.

Not a bad idea either.

just a thought but if it was just a mental thing and when he sees 500 on the bar it messes him up then instead of normal band deadlifts you could try reverse band deads and maybe that would help the mental side of it because he will be putting 500+ on the bar for his sets even though he isnt physically lifting 500...

Try doing a blind max with him. Either don't let him look at the plates or do something like use two 25's on the end so he can only see the 4 wheels on there. A lot of it is probably a mental block about the weight and not a strength issue at all. First time I ever blind maxed my bench I crushed my old pr by 25lbs.

Cheers,

Good idea. That's why I tried the kg plates, but in retrospect, they are all the same diameter and could have caused the same problem.

I'd say defecits and make sure he isn't doing the 405x12 and 475x4 before the 500. Pull singles up to that point in 50lb increments. Maybe two weeks between deads. IDK if it is acceptable, but an ammonia cap may be all he needs to realize that he can do it.
