Dimebag Darrel from Pantera is Dead!!!

samoth

New member
Mad gunman got up on stage tonight in Columbus, OH during Damage Plan's set and opened fire -- Dimebag is dead, Vinnie Paul is in the hospital. Others are dead, including several from the audience. When the police got there, the gunman apparently took a hostage.

This is the preliminary... the news just hit the AM news stations around Milwaukee. This will be all over the media tomorrow.

No, this is not a joke.

I heard this also. No band memebers are CONFIRMED yet from what I have heard, though the Columbus news (NBC 4) is reporting otherwise. We will have to wait anbd see. But, eyewitnesses said they saw Dime get shot 5 times. Hopefully, he will pull through. If not, RIP. :(

Holy shit... I can't believe this. WTF!?!

Whiskey

All of the eyewitnesses who informed us were drunk, so they could be misinformed, but AM News50 reported Dimebag as dead, and Vinnie's condition as unknown -- he was rushed to the hospital. Radio reports four others dead...

Damn.

Piss. Who the hell would do something this fucked up!?! Probably a holier than thou person thinking he was doing society a favor

Whiskey

HOLY SHIT. FUCK!

I've hung out with Dimebag and had beers with him last year. TOTALL COOL ass bro. One of the nicest guys you'll meet. Total pro-us, no-bullshit, no-games, got-your-back kinda guy.

Fuck. :(

From the Damageplan Board

I am writing from the Columbus area. I just got off the phone with a friend of mine who runs the lights at the Villa and is actually still there now. He has informed me that the only person confirmed dead is the shooter. Dimebag was shot, but no one has been able to confirm wether he made it through. Vinnie did not get shot. In fact, he used my friends cell phone to call his family.

All we can do now is send our good thought out to Dimebag, the rest of the band and all the other victims.

i'd fire one up right now in memory, but i'm busy with a report.

i'll fire up a few after classes today for him.

his guitar playing held so much influence on me when i was younger and still played. even since then, Pantera has remained in heavy listening rotation. one of the best metal guitarists i've ever heard.

RIP Dimebag Darrel.

From Damageplan board:

"all i can say is holy crap!! that was such a freakin' nightmare... i don't ever want to be a part of anything like that again... i'm still shaking.... i don't even know what to say...

i was up close to the stage on the side where DBD was playing.... then i saw the guy jump out of the crwod onto the stage... he was yelling something about how "you broke up pantera.... you ruined my life.... what about phil??? he needs heroin money..." or something like that then i saw the gun and he shot DBD right in the head... when DBD went down he kept shooting... then he turned around for bobzilla then vinnie... teh hole time i thought it was part of the show... i had blood on me i was so close... i'm still freakin' out here...

after he turned around and kept shooting i was gone... i swear i almost crapped my pants... it was ####' crazy as ####... people were totally messed up outside... i was standing next to this one chick and she was crying and couldn't stop... she fell on the ground and it was like she was possesed or something... dude it was so kayotic its not even funny... the cops showed up and then people started sayin' that DBD was killed... then people started freaking out even more...

i can't belive this happend... its so crazy... its totally unreal and there's no way to describe how messed up i am right now...

i had tickets to the show in flint michigan too... i don't know whats going to happen... theres some blood on my ticket stub so i'm going to sell it on ebay or keep it or something... i know DBD is in heaven (or ripping some mad riffs in hell)

#### what a wild #### nigth... dude i won't even be able to sleep tonight"

Dimebag was the type of guy who never cared if you weren't a fake blonde with big knockers. He'd sit down next to ya and order you a beer w/o a moment's notice. He'd sit for hours with his fans. For a tough metal guy -- he was the nicest guy around. :(

Dude. That is totally crazy and fuckin sucks. What the hell is wrong with people? My god. Dimebag did rule. It doesn't get better than Pantera.

thats f*cked up. I'd like to know that dickheads motive for the shooting

Cemetary gates is playing right now in his honor.

i'm glad i saw Pantera in 96 when they toured with White Zombie. the show i went to was only a month or so after Anselmo OD'ed. crazy shit.

Layne Staley, Dimebag Darrel.....for me, both are very crushing blows. i think i now know how my dad felt when John Lennon was shot. i was alive then, but not old enough to even know who Lennon was.

Damn this is sad news.. I had beers with him and a dude that went on to play for LA Guns at the kitkat club in NY YEARS ago, straight up guy. no bullshit. Sad.

Crack: I was around the corner on CentralParkWest, about a block away, from the doorway where Lennon got shot, chilling on a balcony of my buddy's parent's place... didn't hear any gunfire, but right then, right there. Saw the cops and abulance arrive, decided to see what the commotion was about and as we came around the corner of the Dakota to see a bunch of total freaks tearing their shirts to dip a piece of cloth in some blood on the ground, more news folks started to arrive.

My boy bill said, "Must have been Yoko, somebody got tired of her bullshit." I kid you not. Two fat cows near us heard him and FREAKED... it was then they said it was John...

The whole scene still freaks me out to this day. Surreal.

If this is indeed the case, rest in peace, DD.....

I knew this assfuck would do this shit for this stupid reason. Piece of shit. I'm glad that cop was there to ice that guy.

What a tragedy man. I just saw Damageplan like 2 weeks ago.

RIP Dimebag.

This a great loss for the Metal/Rock community and for myself Darrell was one of the best and most influential guitarists in the last two decades. I live in Cinci and a couple of friends and I almost drove to Columbus last night to see the show. I'm glad I did'nt now. I am somewhat in shock about this. Dime was one of my guitar heroes and will be greatly missed by me and many others. This is a horrible tragedy and may God be with Darrell's family and friends and all his great fans. R.I.P. Darrell "Dimebag"Abbott!

RIP from a fellow axe slinger. I will have to get fucked up and pick out a few licks tonight when I get home in his honor. It's a fucking shame. It's too bad the shooter is dead. It would have been interesting to find out what his problem was. And then of course, we would kill the fuck.

Take note that all this happened on the anniversary of John Lennon's killing. December 8.

People here in Dallas are freaking. The brothers were from here and have lots of friends and family. The DJ's, club owners, everyone are FREAKING OUT.

WTF is wrong with people? Crazy......

unbelievable. pantera was and always will be the epitome of metal. i still can't wrap my head around this. absolutely unconceivable. strangest shit ever, i sit down at the computer this morning, and RANDOMLY decide it's time for some pantera (the "pantera gym mix" as i've dubbed it) go on aol to check my mail, and FUCK!!!! the headlines, dimebag is dead. i can't fathom this. he is one of, if not THE best, metal guitarist, EVER. PERIOD. i gonna have to have a couple of "black tooth grins" for him this weekend.

RIP Dimebag

Still a bit in shock, and still very sad here. Woke up this morning and stared at my Dimebag poster on the wall. Then had to realize he left this planet just a few hours.

Me and my band are gonna jam on Cowboys from Hell friday.

Needless to say -- my pantera baseball cap will be worn all this weekend in his honor.

I suspect that this writer is full of shit. And the bloody ticket on eBay thing is ghoulish.

I worked a show for Damage Plan a few months ago at my small 300-seat venue, and they were all just as nice as can be. Dime and Vinnie were both friendly, polite, and funny. The crew were all ex-Pantera and all sweethearts. Their whole outfit was a class act, top to bottom. What a senseless loss.

What makes this story sad is that the fans fucking loved that man. I had the pleasure of seeing their show a couple weeks ago, and chants of "Dimebag! Dimebag!" were the loudest from the crowd all night. The man had a smile on his face the entire set.

It could have just been an hour of Darrel up on stage fucking around with his guitar, and no one would have minded a bit.

Such a sad day in the music world.

:(

man.. he was an inspiration to guitar players everywhere (me included). RIP Dimebag.

Great, the club where I work has been approached by all three local TV news organizaions. I guess it's because (1) Damage Plan played here a few months ago, and (B) we're a similar size club to the one where the shooting occurred. I guess they want to do an exposee on security at bars.

Fucking ghouls, they were all over us the next day after the fire in Rhode Island too.

The shooter's lucky he's dead. If he somehow survived -- the Hells Angels would get him for sure. And nobody would ever blame them for doing it. Those biker gangs do have a useful purpose sometimes.

WTF,can't they point those things at a politician or somethin'? Always a good guy gettin' it.

I jus saw a bit on the news, the shooter was an ex-marine, the last person i would think would do this kinda thing.

no shit--i turned on the stereo n just jammed to ImBroken then got here n see this. fucking pecker if i were inmate id slain his fucking ass. jerk

I'm sure you'll see plenty of psychologists on the news now trying to make sense of this..

but in a nutshell -- many soldiers, who may already have a higher degree of hot-temperedness and violent behaviour to begin with -- have a hard time turning off that "killing mode" when they come back.

As a result, many flip out and killing becomes second nature. Like lighting a cigarette. It really is scary. Most of the killings are wives, bar fight enemies, road rage, etc.

Never before though has it progressed to the extent of actually murdering people at concerts. He may have been a marine, but he stripped away ALL RIGHTS to be called a marine the moment he fired the first shot.

it took me about 6 months to "calm down" once i got out of the Marine Corps, but i wasn't so fucked in the head that i was ready to go kill people. well, not all the time anyway.

whatever this guy's reason was, it wasn't a good one.

this is the reason i no longer attend cocerts. im a heavy metal freak myself but ever since a gay dude jumped my friend at an ac/dc concert and tried rapping him--no fucking way. needless to say i beat the fuck out of him and got thrown out as well. fucking loosers.

I just heard that the guy was blaming DD for breaking up pantera when he was shooting.

Statement from Dean Guitars: (good read)

Dean Guitars founder Dean B. Zelinsky has issued the following statement regarding the death of DAMAGEPLAN/ex-PANTERA guitarist Dimebag Darrell:

"As I sit here awake at 2:34 am, feeling numb beyond belief to the news that our good friend Darrell Abbott is no longer with us, I would like to share my thoughts as they come to mind.

"I met Darrell when he was only a kid, not old enough to get into the clubs for which he would later grace the stages throughout his impressive career. This kid was great at 16 years old and destined to become the idol we now know as Dimebag Darrell.

"Darrell became the true persona of a rock star. He personified and exemplified the rock life …he lived it 24/7. It is the Dimebag Darrells that make this industry we all are so emotionally attached to 'bigger than life.' He truly knew his role...after all; he was also rock's biggest fan. He grew up with the dream and had what it takes to put it all together.

"Anyone who ever met Dimebag Darrell will tell you, they were touched for life. He treated his fans like royalty, as he knew what it was like to be a kid at a concert and seeing your idol onstage…he wanted to give it all back. When Darrell was off stage, he was always aware of whom he was and the effect he had on his fans. People who knew him will tell you that behind the persona of Dimebag Darrell was a guy who was kind, loyal, sentimental, full of emotion, full of life, charismatic and extremely talented. Darrell was an artist not only with a guitar but also with a pen. When I would meet with him, he would show up with a file folder full of drawings of his guitar designs.

"Just a few weeks ago I was with Darrell at a show in Milwaukee. Backstage after the show, two kids were waiting at the stage door and would not leave without seeing Darrell. When he got wind of this he insisted they be brought back to meet him. These kids were so in awe to meet their idol, then Darrell rocked their world when he put them on the VIP list for the Chicago show the very next day.

"Darrell was one of rock's greatest guitarists. He took metal to whole new level and showed young rockers how the instrument was to be played. He made young kids all over the world want to pick up a guitar and play like Dime! He potentially inspired more kids to play guitar than any artist in recent history.

"On a personal note, words cannot express the loss I am feeling. Of all the stars I have met in the past 28 years, nobody touched me like Darrell. He was the artist who would bring me on stage and introduce me as the world's greatest guitar maker. He was a fan of mine as I was a fan of him. No single artist has done more for the popularity of Dean Guitars than Dimebag Darrell.

"These past months working with Darrell on new guitar designs, talking to him just about every day have been the most invigorating times in my 28-year career. Seeing Dime onstage with a Dean in his hands again brought back feelings I thought were gone forever. Just yesterday I was on the phone with him discussing the photo shoot we had set up for the show in Michigan on Friday to introduce his new Razorback design. He started talking about how he couldn't wait to get home in a few days to work on the new DAMAGEPLAN CD. He said this new CD was going to be heavier than ever and blow people's minds.

"I cannot help but think about Rita. She and Darrell had been together since they were in 3rd grade. I have worked very closely with her these past months as she handles all of Dime's affairs. She is truly the woman behind the man and Dimebag would have told you, he wouldn't have been Dimebag without Rita. She is one very special person and I cannot fathom the pain she must be feeling. Our deepest sympathy goes out to his brother Vinnie and the rest of his family. Our hearts go out as well to the other victims of this horrible tragedy.

"Darrell was a living legend. He lived every day of his life to the fullest. I will always remember his smile onstage. He loved what he did and it showed. No matter how big the crowd, he could always find you and fling a guitar pick your way. We at Dean have lost a great artist but more importantly, a true friend. The world has lost a great human being."

Shooter was only in the Marines a short time (a year maybe? Maybe less. I forget), and was honorably discharged. No one's confirmed why, though.

Platinum-selling pop-rock singer/songwriter Michelle Branch has posted the following message regarding the death of DAMAGEPLAN/ex-PANTERA guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott:

"I am so sad to hear about Dimebag being shot and killed while doing something he loves. I was lucky to meet him (photo) and he was one of the sweetest guys. It's hard to believe that a lot of clubs don't offer metal detectors (because they can't afford them) or proper security. Most of the security you see at shows are just normal guys who either volunteer or simply wear a t-shirt that says security. Something needs to change.

"Any ideas? Petitions? Letters to your local clubs?

"If musicians start feeling unsafe doing what they love, we'll have a big problem."

Typical pansy-ass response. One shooting, admittedly a high-profile one, and suddenly everyone feels unsafe?

Branch probably wasn't allowed out of her child safety seat until she was 12.

I thought she was joking at first... even though she wasn't.

"Metal detector" ... at a metal show... full of metal heads... LOL!

Dimebag would've laughed at that one!
