didn't Arnold say to do 50 pull-ups total or something?

I remember hearing that Arnold said to do as many pull-up sets it takes to get to 50, maybe it was more, I can't remember.

I'm looking for ways to change my back routine and was thinking of trying this out. I usually pyramid using weight, something like 10, 8, 6, 5.

I wonder if he did each set to failure when trying to reach the total number??

i got his encyclopedia a few months back and yes, on his 'basic' routine day for chest/back he does have 50 CHIN ups listed, not pullups and he says do as many sets as necessary til you get to 50...

peace,
CN

50 could be quite extensive for a beginner. I first started doing pull-ups regularly with sets of 10, 8, 6, 6 for a total of 30 and to tell you the truth I have noticed a difference in that lift more than anything I've ever done. My lat spread became very apparent after only a few days of that routine. I'm going to work up to 50 one of these days, but I don't think a beginner should do that.

personaly i wouldnt fallow arnolds advice. arnold was a genetic freak as you can tell by looking at pictures of him when he was a teen. very few of us could train 6 days a week for hours at a time without overtraining.

50 is a lot

especially if you didn't take 400mg of Test ;)

geez, i remember they used to make you do pull ups in elementary school, i guess P.E. is different now.

I also agree with booey. The most ive done in one try was 30? Or a little bit more. We had a competition in high school and I pulled 30 something in it. Came in second, first was a monster. :P I havent done chinups for a while, and i love it. I think im gonna get back to that. 50 seems like a very cool goal. Ill try that from now on, it sounds challenging. :D

5 sets of 10 reps ... if you can do that many, why not?

This is pretty much what I was thinking, start out with just BW and then add small amounts of weight over time to get some progressive resistance...maybe try and get all 50 in 5 sets or less, then add 5lbs for the next workout...just something to mix it up. I've been bored with my back workouts lately.

I would say go to failure when doing volume training.. it'll prevent you getting the # you want

stop a few reps short of failure on each mini set.. 10 sets of 5 should be fine
