Deep Impact due to strike at 2AM EDT Monday

Yay, I got my name on that DI thingy.

I've been following the DI project for a couple years now... the damn thing took forever to get from the BP to launch to approach. No wonder why people watch football and stuff instead.

Where'd it get its name? Sounds like something from a Douglas Adams novel. The AP story says the impact will be visible from a telescope. Nothing an amateur would use, though, right?

The 820-lb. copper impactor released 24 hours before impact. 2005
July 3
Spacecraft flyby deflection maneuver. 2005
July 3
Deep Impact observes the impact crater for 14 minutes as it flies over the comet. 2005
July 4
Deep Impact waits five minutes as it passes debris in the comet tail, then turns to observe the departing comet for 24 hours. 2005
July 5
Data is sent to NASA's 210-ft. Deep Space Network antennas during impact and to 112-ft. antennas for one more week. 2005
July 11
The impactor images will be sent until just seconds before it hits the comet.

They forgot a step:

July 12
Long-Dormant alien race counter-attacks Earth from their comet home, observing the spectacular impact crater. Ooooh! Ahhhh!

The Necromongers were the bad guys in the Chronicles of Riddick, they came out of comets. Mathilda May was in the movie, LifeForce, about alien vampires that came from comets, nice boobage in a 1985 British film.

thanks for the heads up. dude I still got to see that riddick shit. damn. i am behind.

Ok, the probe successfully released the impactor and its streaking toward the comet. Looks like at 01:48 EDT it's going to strike the comet as scheduled. If you live in Southern California you may be able to see it from a home telescope, but it'll be very close to the horizon. Thoe with direct TV can view the probes video feed supposedly from NASA TV. Watching NASA TV now, only showing the control room so far.
