Db vs BB help....

okay, ive read everywhere that doing bench press with db's is harder than with the bar. well ive gotten up to using 100 pound dbs for chest, and im having trouble with the same amount on the bar. is this common? is my form wrong? any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

If you popped the 100 lb dbels up and cant do same wieght on flat bar..Something is very wrong.

Cant comment on form w/out seeing it.

if you practice db's then you will be good at db's. You might have the strength but you might lack the coordination at first, just some time and practice, and remember the bar weighs 45lbs as well.

All depends on what you do more. Barbell is different in that your hands are fixed on the bar where your hand position can move relative to each other on DBs. I'm struggling with BB right now but I've never done it consistently because I lift alone and it's easier to do DBs and not worry about getting pinned. Try different hand position...wide, narrow...on the BB and keep working...it'll come along in time.

My experience has been that neither one lends itself to the other. As my BB bench went up, my DB went down or stayed stagnant, and visa-versa. Both have been my primary chest move at one time or another.

I think both are good lifts, and the type of athletes that use each pretty much speak for themselves.

if your bench pressing 100lb DBs, you should easily handle 100 on the bar-- your form/ bar placement/ grip or something else is wrong!!

most guys can BB bench press about 2-3 times what they DB bench press...

2-3x what they DB press? You mean a single DB? I tend to use a pair when I DB bench :D I bieleve he was saying that he can handle 100lb DBs but has trouble with 200lbs on BB.

doesnt matter... if your pressing 100lb DBs-- you should be able to put up 200 on flat bench no problem..

db

correct, i use flat bench with 2 100 pd dbs no problem. benching 200 is a little harder for me than using the db's.

Just try to leave the dbels for a while and only train with the BB and you'll be able to lift the same weight (2X100 and 200)

Do you go all the way down and touch your chest with the DB's? Most guys I see using them go about 2/3 of the way.

Actually, I don;t think it sounds all that weird. I was pushing 90's on DB's quite a while ago, and had a hard time with ~200 on BB.

My problem was my form. It hurt too much to try and do more on BB. (PL style benching and rotator cuff work fixed that.)

Not saying that's njlw226's issue also, just pointing that out.

OMG...I could have sworn i was the only one. Dude, that makes 2 of us. I can press 100 lb db's 5 times clean, but yet, i can get 225 on flat bench no more than 5 times clean.

I am not sure why it is a problem with you, but i know with me, it is the fact that when i started working out, i was so weak and always got made fun of when i was at the bench press. Therefore, i got intimidated by the bench press and worked out with dumb-bells. Now, 3 years later, i realized that i shouldnt have given a shit about the assholes that made fun of me because everybody starts out somewhere. It was my mistake, and i am now paying for it.

I am doing my best to hit flat bench now and getting my strength on that particular excercise. I believe once i get used to that movement, and perform it over and over again, I will get much stronger fast since the strength is there. And to the people that made fun of me, they are now licking and sniffing my balls at the gym because i look 3x as good as they do.

Good luck and let us know how you fair with it.
